Following a live incident on the Internet which involved the Australian version of Endemol’s Big Brother, the Australia government is considering regulation of all live Internet content.
The incident involved streaming of live content which bordered on sexual assault.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) may be asked to step in to regulate what is screened on emerging technologies as well as what is broadcast on television.
At the moment streamed video is not viewed as broadcasting and therefore not subject to regulations. Only content which is stored and then made available for viewing is regulated by ACMA.
It will however be difficult to control video streamed from outside Australia which would mean those who want to screen risqué content will move overseas. One way round this would be that adult-rated material on the Internet would have to be paid for.
