Sanjeev Singh, Director of Acquisition and Distribution for South African company Videovision Entertainment, announced on the opening day of the Cannes International Film Festival the acquisition of Richard Kelly’s (Donnie Darko) sci-fi thriller, Southland Tales.

The film, which is in Competition in the Official Selection of the festival, stars The Rock, Seann William Scott, Michelle Sarah Gellar, Justin Timberlake and Miranda Richardson, with music by Moby.

Southland Tales is an ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on 4 July, 2008, as the city stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Boxer Santaros is an action star who’s stricken with amnesia. His life intertwines with Krysta Now, an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and David Clark, a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.

Said Richard Kelly, “The conclusion of TS Eliot’s 1925 poem The Hollow Men has been altered for satirical effect in Southland Tales, a comedic spin on the apocalypse, as it should occur in the great city of Los Angeles. Trust me on this one – if the end is indeed upon us, it is going to happen in Los Angeles first. I have always been obsessed with this whole apocalypse thing. Southland Tales will take you down that other road, the one that ends with a bang.”

Sanjeev Singh said, “It is a major coup for us to have acquired Southland Tales on the first day of Cannes. There has been a great buzz about the film and it is definitely a contender for the coveted Golden Palm Award of the Cannes International Film Festival.”

Southland Tales is scheduled to be released in South Africa later this year.
