As might be expected, Mission Impossible 3, is doing respectable business at the South African box office, having made R3 543 352 in its opening week. Local film critic Barry Ronge described the film as “a Tom Cruise film and not a Mission Impossible film”, as it has wall-to-wall close-ups of the star.
In the meantime, Mission Impossible 3 is not making quite as much as expected overseas. Some international reports have attributed its slightly disappointing performance to Cruise having lost a fair whack of his female fan base, due to his over the top, man-in-love-with-Katie-Holmes behaviour.
Back to the local box office: the new animated film The Wild is in the number two spot with R4 080 665 in just two weeks. The Meryl Streep/Uma Thurman comedy Prime is at number three (R2 710 849). In fourth spot is Ice Age 2 with a huge
R20 880 966 amassed from its six weeks on the circuit. Memoirs of a Geisha, for which won SA DOP Dion Beebe won his Best Cinematography Oscar is in fifth place.
