COMMENTS ALISTAIR KING – CHAIRPERSON

Think of this month as a sneak preview of what has been entered into D&AD and One Show. Clearly we are pinning all our hopes on our print work, with the newspaper category in particular being huge this month. Campaigns dominated the number of entries, as well as the winners.

Overall, the marks the panel dished out were very low with the highest marks, surprisingly, being scored in TV and Radio. We’re either very harsh on our print categories or there’s a glimmer of hope in our electronic media. Nevertheless, we have 5 winners who are worthy of awards. Keep in mind that the first 3 positions all go forward to Ad of the Year neeeext year.

I do want to make the personal comment that if there was a mixed media campaign, Susuki would have walked it. I’ll put my proverbial on the block by saying I think they are going to do very well with this campaign.

NEWSPAPER.

The Metropolitan campaign is magnificently art directed, and it was this that ultimately put it on top. The fact that it is great work in a notoriously difficult category also worked in its favour. Elliott International was also marked up for that reason and came in at 2nd with a very simple but elegant campaign. For pure irreverency, the Joburg zoo campaign came in at 3rd

MAGAZINE
Generally speaking, the panel felt this was the weakest category, with the Sasol campaign pipping the Nedbank Affinity campaign. A good piece of retail from Cell C came in at 3rd.

FILM
The top 3 ads are all excellent in my opinion, but the production values of Nike made it a clear winner in terms of its score. Keith, it is absolutely beautiful, (and quite eina in places), so well done. The Suzuki ad in 2nd place is very simple, very funny and very, very strong. It’s great to see a simple, cost effective idea doing well. Nedbank Horses came in at 3rd, with scores that were very divided.

RADIO
The knight rider spoof campaign for Opel is just pure cut-through. In the context of all the noisy, messy entries in this category, the Opel ads simply give the ear a rest, not to mention the fact that they are very funny. 2nd place goes to a spot that is conceptually awesome. Instead of writing an ad about gender equality, the agency wrote a song that starts out like a love song and evolves into one about abuse – a very smart and fresh media idea

OUTDOOR
The Suzuki poster is cracker. As one judge put it, “just when you thought you had seen it all”. In a category dominated by posters, it was good to see the 2nd place go to a good media idea in the form of Distell/Nederberg. 5FM came in at 3rd with a campaign that spoofs cheesy record covers.
