World Literacy Foundation and Vizrt Group launch international partnership to tackle illiteracy rates among disadvantaged children

The World Literacy Foundation and the Vizrt Group have announced an international charity partnership for 2020 to bring literacy skills to 500,000 highly disadvantaged children who can’t read or write.

The collaborative partnership will allow the World Literacy Foundation to harness the technology and expertise of the Vizrt Group in order to help reach their objective to give children from disadvantaged backgrounds access to books and learning resources.

The Vizrt Group has pledged to make a $250,000 donation encompassing technology, resources, expertise and cash.

Petter Ole Jakobsen, Founder and Chief Innovation Officer at the Vizrt Group, says; “We believe at the Vizrt Group that storytelling is one of the keys to a better-informed world. By making reading skills a priority for disadvantaged children we can stimulate their curiosity helping them to gain the skills that can change their world.”

In 2020, 770 million people in the world are illiterate and a further 2 billion people struggle to read a single sentence.

According to CEO of the World Literacy Foundation, Andrew Kay, this is an international disgrace and much more needs to be done.

Kay says, “We must provide every child a chance to learn to read. At the WLF we estimate the social and economic cost of illiteracy is hundreds of billions each year. If a child struggles to read, they often become an adult who struggles with issues related to unemployment, welfare, crime and health. Research tells us every $1 spent on quality literacy development, returns back $7 to the economy.”

Jakobsen states that “Video is the most effective form of digital communication out there today – and we happen to be experts in it. If we can utilise this expertise to help the WLF reach their goals in 2020 then we will be living and breathing our purpose as an organisation.”

Kay continues, “We hope that the partnership with the Vizrt Group can help us with several projects across the year including our Sun Books initiative. This initiative provides classrooms in Africa a new, innovative solar panel tablet device that will lift the reading skills of children in 1200 remote and significantly under-resourced classrooms, and mainly in places where there is limited internet connection and electricity.”

Vizrt Live Production Control Webinar: Tearing down the walls of the control room

Is your control room outdated and leaving you wondering how you are going to thrive in the future of broadcast?

In today’s landscape, there’s an emerging new vision of storytelling replacing the old way of production. It boils down to a single word, “software”. In today’s world of fragmented viewership, software gives you the freedom to adapt, to flex as needed, and to scale as appropriate. Software can do things proprietary hardware could never do and lets you tell stories in new ways you couldn’t have imagined a few short years ago.

The key is partnering with the right software company. In this webinar, you will be shown how your control room – using the latest Vizrt production software – can make its own quantum leap forward into this bright new future.

Speaker: Vegard Elgesem, Senior Product Manager at Vizrt

Vegard Elgesem is the Senior Product Manager for Vizrt’s live production control tools including Viz Mosart, Viz Verdi, Viz Opus and Viz Vectar. As a part of the original Mosart Medialab, he started managing Mosart projects in European broadcasters. Following Vizrt’s acquisition of Mosart Medialab, he relocated to Asia to help broadcasters across APAC modernize their live production. Vegard took on the role as a Senior Product Manager in the beginning of 2020, and he’s now a part of the global product team that develops the next generation of production tools in Vizrt, among these are Viz Verdi and Viz Vectar.

Pebble Beach Systems integrates with Vizrt to enhance playout graphics

Pebble Beach Systems, a leading automation, content management and integrated channel specialist, recently announced that it has partnered with graphics specialist Vizrt to integrate the Viz Engine into its Dolphin and Orca integrated playout solutions.

Integrated channel technology can hugely simplify the playout chain for broadcasters by delivering logistical, space and cost savings. Typically, these solutions incorporate video server, master control switcher, subtitling, captioning, channel branding and more within a software-defined environment. But for many broadcasters the on-board graphics capabilities are no match for the high end functionality their chosen graphics tools can deliver.

Alison Pavitt, Marketing Manager at Pebble, confirms: “Ultimately it’s about choice and reducing the total cost of ownership. Broadcast graphics are fundamental to channel identity, so broadcasters naturally don’t want to compromise on their branding when reviewing their playout technology choices. That’s why Pebble has collaborated with the top graphics companies in the industry to ensure that our end users can have access to their preferred best-of-breed graphics tools and enhance their carefully crafted graphics workflows. We’re proud to be partnering with one of the biggest names in broadcast graphics, Vizrt, to offer the Viz Engine software plug-in for our Dolphin and Orca solutions.”

By offering this functionality through a shared memory interface as a software plug-in which utilizes a GPU, Pebble confirmed that it is no longer necessary to pass video signals between disparate devices, which in the IP world could mean high bandwidth demand. This not only simplifies the playout chain, but also greatly reduces network bandwidth within the cloud, since the video interconnect to and from the third party system has been eliminated. It also reduces the amount of hardware required to run a channel whilst providing a full graphics workflow.

Gerhard Lang, CTO, Vizrt, says; “Pebble Beach Systems did a fantastic job integrating our graphics into their software-defined integrated and IP channel solutions. Both companies strive for quality, performance and reliability and the outcome reflects this. Through previous partnerships and endeavors our two companies have built up a high level of trust and respect, making this integration an obvious success.”

  • The importance of IP as the format of the future will be presented at A New Era of Live Production, looking at why NDI is one of the key standards for achieving efficient IP production
  • IP-based, software defined visual storytelling (SDVS) production and traditional SDI enhancements to production platforms will enable powerful automation-driven storytelling capabilities

The Vizrt Stage on Stand 7.B01 will also premier a range of disruptive thought leadership presentations, as well as fresh content for the renowned feature presentations. This includes The Big AR Sports Show which will show audiences how the Vizrt Sports software can be utilised for easy-to-use AR, play analysis, and the monetization of sports and live events content.

The Vizrt Sports offering will be an important feature for visitors from sports broadcasters and rights holders in preparation for the Olympics, UEFA EUROs, and other major sporting events in 2020.

The BBC’s iconic Match of the Day is broadcasting to UK living rooms, as well as digital platforms and social media channels with coverage that includes hundreds of hours of match footage, studio discussion, interviews, news packages, and analysis.

Augmented reality in Red Square

Match of the Day’s live Red Square studio features augmented reality (AR) graphics to help pundits and hosts tell the story of each match with stats, team news and a few surprises along the way. This is all set up with an impressive view of St. Basil’s Cathedral in the background.

The aim is to let the viewer feel that they are being taken directly from Red Square into the live stadium action with a 180-degree camera move.

Croatian tracking specialists, stYpe are providing tracking for six cameras in the studio while the UK’s Alston Elliott (AE) were challenged to design and are operate AR graphics to compliment the broadcaster’s teams. Vizrt’s Viz Engine is the workhorse behind all of the graphics rendering, including AR in the studio and virtual set extensions to hide the massive amounts of production systems in the Red Square studio.

“AE is delighted to be working with BBC Sport to assist with the delivery of its highly impactful World Cup studio in Moscow,” said Stuart Coles, chief commercial officer at Alston Elliott. “To be involved with such a high-profile event undoubtedly inspired our creative, R&D and broadcast engineering teams to really push the boundaries of what is possible and we are both proud and delighted with the results achieved.”

We’re incredibly proud that four RedSpy systems are tracking every camera movement from the Red Square studio and truly excited to be covering the World Cup together, making it another successful collaboration,” said Stype Cajic, stYpe CEO.

“We’re very proud that BBC Sport and Alston Elliott continue to innovate with our technology, this year’s World Cup is the boldest yet for all involved, let’s hope England’s football team do us proud too,” said Mark Pizzey, Vizrt’s key account manager.

ATG Danmon completes control room upgrade for BBC Scotland

ATG Danmon has completed a systems integration project for BBC Scotland. The project centred on the modernisation of a compact television gallery assigned to the production of bulletin-style news programmes.

“Careful co-ordination was vital to ensure the daily broadcast schedule could continue as normal,” comments ATG Danmon project manager Howard Dixon.

“This was achieved by installing all the required new equipment in a temporary control room which could be fully configured and used for staff training before going live. Once that was fully operational, we decommissioned and emptied the legacy control room before moving the complete system in.

“We achieved the switchover with complete success in little more than half a day. The infrastructure includes new VizRT Mosart control and playout automation, a large Adder Link Infinity KVM system, a Media Wall multiscreen display using Sony 55 inch 4K monitor screens, and J.L. Cooper audio fader control.

“We also designed and integrated a large Custom Consoles L-shaped control desk to fit the available space. This is configured for use by up to a five-strong team comprising news editor, teleprompter, producer, director and technical operator.”

Based in Glasgow, BBC Scotland currently transmits three TV channels (BBC One Scotland, BBC Two Scotland, BBC Alba) and two radio stations (BBC Radio Scotland and BBC Radio nan Gàidheal). It currently produces approximately 15,000 hours of television and radio programming per year.

Part of the Danmon Group, ATG Danmon has been at the forefront of the transition to the file-based technology now used throughout the industry. It has also assisted many clients in the construction of IT-based automated file workflow systems, high-definition studios, master control rooms and playout facilities, as well as the upgrade of existing SD systems to HD and UHD. By embracing tomorrow’s technology, ATG Danmon delivers maximum value through close co-operation with suppliers and customers, leading to mutually beneficial long-term relationships.

ATG Danmon also offers a comprehensive range of products and services including transcoding and automated workflow management, accelerated global file transfer, media workflow-design, project-planning, equipment installation, software-configuration, commissioning, documentation, on-site training plus ongoing support and maintenance.

With offices in Asia, Denmark, Germany, the Middle East, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom, the Danmon Group thinks globally and acts locally to support customers with its highly experienced sales and engineering teams.
