Cris Blyth on building a digital content studio in East Africa

Written by Bryant Frazer for StudioDaily

GoodMakers Films is a production company with a mission. Leveraging the storytelling chops of co-founders Tilo Ponder and Cris Blyth, GoodMakers aims to bring new exposure to worthy charities, non-government organisations and marginalised communities through documentaries and community projects. Ponder had worked previously on multimedia advertising campaigns and her husband, Blyth, was a commercial director, animator, editor and VFX artist, but both of them were eager for a change that would make them feel like they were contributing more to the greater good. They just didn’t realise at the time how dedicated they would become to that cause. We asked Blyth Five Questions about GoodMakers Films and its work with not-for-profit groups and youth-led organisations in Kenya and beyond.

Your motto is “increasing charity impact through documentary films.” How do you accomplish that?

Cris Blyth: There are many charities or NGOs out there. Some of them don’t need help; they have good messaging and good stories that get them donations to further their cause. However, we found that there were some great NGOs that didn’t know how to tell their stories effectively and were always working hard to get funds to sustain themselves. As filmmakers, we can find the right way of telling the story to appeal to an international donor base, which is important because many of these community charities are based in developing countries.

We made an effort to leverage our storytelling expertise to benefit charities and create meaningful impact. We vetted different causes, raised funds, and planned trips to spend time with the charity founders. We got to interact with their communities and translate their value proposition into compelling short documentaries. It was — and still is — a great success. Using the short documentaries to reach international donors, the charities have not only raised awareness of their existence but have taken in considerable donations. It has had an immeasurable impact on us personally and on the charities we seek to help.

Initially based in Los Angles, we balanced our efforts by working our “regular” jobs for around nine months of the year and taking about three months to go film and edit the projects. Over the first couple of years, the 70-30 split became 60-40, then 50-50. At that point, we realized that a change might be coming for us.

How do you discover and select the subjects for your films?

After our first film, we found that people came to us. We were connected to other networks like Creative Visions, a group that, among other things, does a great job of connecting the right activists and donors to the right projects. That said, we are careful about which projects we take on. We look for NGOs that have an end goal and a game plan to either do the work and expand, or replace themselves as they grow and help others. After a few years, we also had other corporate social-responsibility projects from the likes of Southwest Airlines and Ericsson. We also had incredibly helpful tech partners such as Red Digital Cinema, Sony, Drobo, and NewTek to help us along. Without that help, it would have been incredibly difficult to finance the work.

Tell us about a recent project and how it successfully raised awareness of a specific cause or community.

Our most recent project has been a complete shift for us — to Kenya! My wife, Tilo, was asked to work on the 2013 presidential elections by the Kenya Red Cross and its partners, which culminated in a peace campaign called “Chagua Peace” — something that was especially needed after the violence of the 2007-2008 Kenya elections. During the same period, our GoodMakers Films team worked with local youth to hold Kenya’s first Youth Town Hall, giving young Kenyans from marginalsed communities a voice to discuss issues of concern that impacted their daily lives, including health care, education, skills training, and concerns over corruption. This project was a great success and led Tilo to realise that the youth in Kenya didn’t really have a voice in matters of governance and civic engagement. That’s when she really discovered what talent there was here in Kenya — talent that we realised could find presence through video, radio, and TV. So we decided to stay and do something about it.

Over the past four years, we’ve built a youth-culture platform that encompasses radio, TV, and blog posts — all online, and all written and produced by our young staff. It’s called “What’s Good Networks.” We are now East Africa’s leading digital content studio and aim to become the premium entertainment platform celebrating Africa’s youth culture globally. We were the first to live-stream back when most Kenyans didn’t have a smartphone. So we were early to be on time. We have always served a mobile-first audience with a focus on under-30 consumers who get their media predominantly online. Our writers, editors, camera people, producers, and hosts create and produce original shows. We guide them by training them in all aspects of production, and we maintain an international standard to ensure our content will be consumed globally. Kenya TV is still in SD — yes, standard definition PAL. However, everything we make is in HD. NewTek supplied us with a TriCaster 8000 system, which really allowed us to work efficiently and deliver quality products that we can all be proud of. One of the shows we make, ShengTalk, is based entirely on the popular urban informal settlement language Sheng. The show is very popular. We’ve known the hosts since they were 14 years old and now, all grown up, they are rising celebrities in their own right.

However, it’s incredibly difficult doing something new like this in a foreign country like Kenya, which has its own complexities from a political, cultural, and business perspective. Doing business in Kenya is not for the faint of heart. We have had to be very agile to respond to shifting market trends. Throughout our time here, we have been adamant that our mission is to build long-term value and produce excellent content that is made for, by, and about young Africa — but ultimately can be consumed by global audiences. Our impact is now being felt, and our brand is very recognisable. Indeed, we feel our efforts are paying off.

What are the special challenges of this kind of work? What are the key tools that help you make the most of your time in production and post-production?

Because we film a lot of footage monthly, we need an effective way of storing the footage. Although we have a generator and UPS systems, the power spikes can still affect our systems, and we’ve lost whole RAID units in the past due to voltage fluctuations. Hard drives can also simply die, as we all know. So tape is the best solution. When I bought an mLogic mTape unit, it came with a trial of Imagine Products’ PreRoll Post. Initially I thought, “This is fine, but I’m sure there are other options.” However, after spending a long time going through trial periods on many, many different offerings, I came back to PreRoll Post because it simply worked. Other solutions that were comparable in price didn’t even offer a hierarchical folder view. And because PreRoll Post is LTFS, it’s easy to use with other programs, like NeoFinder. (We are still in the process of moving our archives from hard drive to tape, and NeoFinder helps catalog all media on all formats, tape and hard drive.) While some of the other software might be better at simply dealing with footage, PreRoll Post can handle full projects. We offload the entire project — music, scripts, everything. And PreRoll Post is simple enough for just about anyone to use.

How can others in the industry support what you do?

We’ve spent many years making films to help others, but we’ve now built something that can really take off, like a jet plane sitting on the runway just waiting for fuel. It’s a comprehensive ecosystem: What’s Good Studios, an in-house digital agency and full production services; the What’s Good Networks publishing platform; What’s Good Radio online; and What’s Good Live live video streaming. We are open to the world for business, not just in Kenya, and we’re sharing “What’s Good” with as many people as possible. This helps us grow and increases the chances that our young teammates can gain the exposure they deserve. Right now, we have around 38 employees, all Kenyan, all under 30, all bristling with ideas and opportunity. We want to be the online hub of African youth-based culture: from Kenya to the world.

Facilis shared storage system installed at Addis Ababa broadcast production facility

Facilis, a leading international supplier of cost-effective, high performance shared storage solutions for collaborative media production networks has announced the successful installation of a multi-user shared storage system within a new state-of-the-art broadcast production facility in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. One of the most advanced broadcast facilities in the region, Facilis has supplied a TerraBlock 24EX/16 64TB shared storage system to Ethiopian regional broadcaster, Addis Ababa State TV. Throughout the project, Facilis worked closely with local channel partner, Onset Media Systems.

Addis Ababa City Government Mass Media Agency is known as ‘the voice of the city’, operating Addis Lisan magazine and the Metropolitan Journal alongside its TV station. Addis Ababa State TV is a 24/7 TV channel broadcasting a mixture of news, current affairs and entertainment programs over satellite and digital terrestrial broadcasts. To enhance its digital broadcast resources, Addis Ababa State TV appointed Onset Media Systems to design, build and commission a new digital workflow.

Onset Media Systems specialises in the design and integration of bespoke systems to meet the needs of mission critical applications within its client operations. At Addis Ababa State TV, it has placed Facilis shared storage at the heart of a complete new digital workflow which supports all of its TV and radio production operations. The Facilis storage system was commissioned in September and the new digital workflow will come online in the coming months.

The Facilis TerraBlock storage system features state-of-the-art high-speed connectivity. It provides a combination of Ethernet (10Gb) plus Fibre Channel (8Gb) connectivity. This advanced multi-user shared storage system is supporting a network of almost 100 editors and other creative production executives at Addis Ababa TV’s production headquarters.

Within this advanced connectivity, staff are able to share content and work collaboratively across the entire spectrum of production activities. The Facilis storage integrates alongside SI Media’s media asset management (MAM), ingest and playout systems, as well as Grass Valley Edius editing and SI Media’s Newsroom system.

Having installed this advanced storage architecture, Addis Ababa has effectively future-proofed its operations in the long-term. In particular, the Fibre Channel option means that the broadcaster can up-scale to HD and 4K workflows in the future, as and when it is needed.

Onset Media Systems is responsible for the design, integration and commissioning of this major new digital workflow – it was their decision to integrate Facilis shared storage in this mission critical application. “The client was attracted to Facilis because of its advanced connectivity options at affordable prices,” comments Jody Dresner, Managing Director – Commercial at Onset Media Systems. “Fibre Channel storage is a very attractive facility for Addis Ababa and this is integrated within a proven, reliable storage system that meets all of our production needs today and long into the future.”

“In Africa, we face a different set of challenges – both physical and economic – than you will find in Europe or North America,” Dresner adds. “Facilis TerraBlock is a proven, reliable storage platform that offers advanced capabilities with associated investment costs that are affordable to our clients – it is a real win-win scenario.”

Rohde & Schwarz NAB 2018 preview

At NAB 2018, Rohde & Schwarz will showcase new products and system solutions spanning many different application areas in the broadcast and electronic media processing market.

Gap filler

Brand new at NAB 2018 is the R&S TLU9 GapFiller, a rebroadcasting product that makes it possible to extend the coverage of main transmitters (high-power and medium-power stations) in specific topologies that cause shadowing effects, such as steep valleys without the need for an additional fully equipped transmitter site.

Many current gap fillers are complex to configure. They only work well for specific reception scenarios and cannot handle changing echo characteristics. The R&S TLU9 GapFiller addresses all these limitations. It offers gap filler operators the optimum combination of top signal quality, best reliability and minimal operational costs. Furthermore, it is the first gap filler to feature R&S smartEC, a built-in intelligent echo cancellation mechanism for self-configuration and automatic adaptation to changing echo characteristics.

R&S smartEC takes the R&S TLU9 GapFiller to the level of performance and reputation of a low-power transmitter. It handles complex echo scenarios, significantly minimises MER degradation, provides self-configuration capabilities and self-adapts to changing echo characteristics. Finally, it saves costs since an engineer does not have to regularly, manually reconfigure the echo cancellation parameters in the field.

Post-production

R&S CLIPSTER is the gold standard workstation for mastering and distributing feature films and episodic TV. R&S CLIPSTER provides a foundation for post production vendors to build services upon. Supporting up to 4K120p, from a wide array of professional media file formats or baseband SDI, R&S CLIPSTER can support various stages of post production with its built-in tools. R&S CLIPSTER can perform conforming, VTR Emulation, Non-linear editing, real-time video processing, advanced colour format transformations, and even guide operators towards a reliable delivery with output wizards to a myriad of professional formats. Create Digital Cinema Packages, Interoperable Mastering Format Packages (IMF), AS11, and AS02 packages with quality, reliability and performance in R&S CLIPSTER. In addition to the creation of files, R&S CLIPSTER also provides rock solid video playback for QC, review and approval, or playout to tape via SDI, Displayport, and HDMI with 16 channels of embedded SDI audio or 16 channels of AES/EBU.

At NAB, Rohde & Schwarz is preview version 6.6 of R&S CLIPSTER, demonstrating a continuous stream of new software developments and hardware configurations which continue to offer efficiency enhancements to R&S CLIPSTER owners now and long into the future.

At the same time, R&S VENICE is the ideal solution for Channel Playout applications. The server is scalable in terms of channels, capacity and bandwidth and offers 24/7 reliability with seamless failover mechanisms.

Encoding and multiplexing

Another Rohde & Schwarz focus at NAB 2018 will be its R&S AVHE100 system solution for encoding and multiplexing. A compact, yet flexible and scalable transcoding, encoding and multiplexing solution, it offers best in class video quality for premium content distribution, including for today’s most advanced video coding standard HEVC – for Over-The-Top (OTT) and broadcast applications. It also fully supports high dynamic range (HDR) video transmission.

The platform provides COTS-based encoding and multiplexing. Its IP-based system workflow provides advanced redundancy options. At NAB, Rohde & Schwarz will demonstrate how the video headend solution integrates seamlessly with the company’s R&S PRISMON monitoring solution to ensure efficient monitoring of all streams received and generated, thereby minimizing customer stress in multi-signal environments that are commonly found in today’s broadcast solutions.

Monitoring and Multiviewer

Another focus for Rohde & Schwarz at NAB 2018 is advanced content monitoring for broadcast and streaming media services featuring its award winning R&S PRISMON multiviewer. As part of the AIMS NAB 2018 interoperability showcase, R&S PRISMON running interoperable implementations of the latest drafts for SMPTE 2110 and AMWA IS-04 in a live environment.

Rohde & Schwarz will demonstrate how R&S PRISMON is applicable to the broadest range of scenarios including Playout, Production, Contribution, Distribution and Cloud environments. Reporting is another key focus with combined data rates, stream types and resolution reporting, thereby reducing management complexity in modern media operations.

Contribution

Also at NAB, Rohde & Schwarz will showcase R&S RelayCaster for live contribution over public internet services. With R&S RelayCaster, reliability of contributing and distributing live content via unmanaged networks is significantly improved, as packet loss issues are efficiently resolved. R&S RelayCaster enables the replacement of expensive satellite links or contracts with CDN service providers. In contrast to these services, RelayCaster is not limited to certain regions or data centers. RelayCaster enables distribution of content across any distance, to any place that is reachable by Internet infrastructure. With optional encryption, data streams will be protected between all senders and receivers (AES).

Storage

At NAB, Rohde & Schwarz will highlight its IBM Spectrum Scale file system, which centres on the R&S SpycerBox multi-user shared storage system. Using the IBM Spectrum Scale file system solution with Rohde & Schwarz storage solutions ensures more efficient storage capacity utilization. Broadcasters, post production houses, corporate organizations and scientific institutes can now implement intelligent solutions for storing their media files based on their needs. The new file system software for R&S SpycerBox Cell and R&S SpycerBox Ultra TL simplifies the storage workflow and makes it more cost-effective.

Reliable storage solutions are essential for broadcasters and post production houses. Digital content is the media industry’s key asset. It must be securely and safely stored. At the same time, certain media files must be quickly and reliably accessible. As budgets shrink and cost pressure grows, efficient storage becomes key in every respect.

To meet these requirements, IBM Spectrum Scale is now available for the R&S SpycerBox product family. This file system enables users to more efficiently utilize different storage tiers based on their needs. Combining high-performance R&S SpycerBox Cell online storage and powerful R&S SpycerBox Ultra TL nearline storage with IBM Spectrum Scale provides the basis for a centralised, tiered storage solution.

Record numbers for Cape Town International Animation Festival 2018

A record number of people enjoyed the annual Cape Town International Animation Festival (CTIAF) which took place over the weekend (2 to 4 March) at the River Club in Cape Town. Presented by Animation SA the Festival, which is now in its seventh year, saw 2000 people attending the event.

The CTIAF has become a significant fixture on the international festival calendar, presenting  the best of local and international films by award-winning animators, as well as providing a unique platform to engage with global industry leaders in a series of insightful workshops, talks and panel discussions. The CTIAF is a marketplace for the fast-growing and internationally acclaimed African animation industry, with business-to-business sessions, producer events, networking opportunities and government panel discussions in addition to student competitions and an outreach programme.

Almost sixty speakers and industry leaders from South Africa, Canada, Japan the USA and France shared their insights and knowledge with attendees.  Members of the public had free access to catch internationally acclaimed films such as The Highway Rat, Big Bad Fox, Mary and the Witch’s Flower and Pear Cider and Cigarettes. The public also took part in the popular free drawing and stop-motion workshops   as well as visiting the Artists Alley, showcasing the work of forty graphic artists and animation studios, as well as live drawing and virtual reality experiences.

“We have been inspired by the response to this year’s festival and excited by how much this event has grown,” says Festival Director Dianne Makings. “From thirty delegates at the first conference seven years ago, the Festival has grown to welcome 2000 visitors and become the continent’s only dedicated animation festival.

“A number of local studios announced exciting developments this year including Sunrise Productions, whose project Munki and Trunk has been acquired by Nickelodeon. We are thrilled that a meeting between them at the Festival in 2015 was the first step in this process,” says Makings.

“We found incredible stories at the Festival, including thirteen year old Ndita Lesenyeho, who travelled from Johannesburg to join us for the weekend. Ndita started drawing aged nine and after attending workshops with the Digital Canvas Academy at the Animation School, the animation bug bit. When she heard about the Festival, she said she couldn’t not attend and was determined to get to Cape Town.”

The Triggerfish Foundation once again facilitated the CTIAF Outreach Programme at the Isivivana centre in Khayelitsha  including drawing classes with Animate Africa, and various workshops to teach the fundamentals of animation. The Isivivana centre also presented the African premiere of The Highway Rat, which was first screened on BBC 1 in England on Christmas Day and which is produced by Magic Light Pictures and animated at Cape Town based Triggerfish Animation Studios.

“The standard of entries for the CTIAF Student Awards was exceptionally high and we congratulate all our winners, especially Lateesha Gillespie and Liam Barnwell. These two students were awarded the phenomenal prize sponsored by Nickelodeon  to have the opportunity to participate in a two week internship at their Burbank studios in the USA,” says Makings.

This is the third consecutive year that Nickelodeon has sponsored this prize.  In addition to their exceptional talent, the two entrants showcased both vision and leadership in their applications. This competition is indicative of Nickelodeon’s commitment to creating platforms which contribute to and uplift Africa’s youth and society.

The CTIAF is proudly presented by Animation SA and is made possible thanks to generous support from sponsors the Department of Arts and Culture, the City of Cape Town, Wesgro, Nickelodeon, the High Commission of Canada, The Japanese Embassy and Consulate in Cape Town and the French Institute of South Africa.  CTIAF has also partnered with Annecy International Animated Film Festival and Animate Africa.

The Cape Town International Animation Festival 2019 will take place from 1 to 3 March 2019. Visit www.ctiaf.com for the full programme details.

“With a title like Nommer 37 and set in a fictional Cape Flats area, you would think that this is a film about gangsters – it’s not. It’s about everything that could go wrong for a couple when depression, curiosity, greed, fear and horrific bad decision-making collide,” says director and writer Nosipho Dumisa.

With deception and greed around every corner, what follows is a thrilling ride that puts both their lives in mortal danger… as the world around Randal deteriorates further and further into chaos.

The film also  boasts a very talented cast, including an impressive performance by Monique Rockman, who makes her big screen debut as leading lady, Pam. Sandi Schultz (Binnelanders, Noem My Skollie), Deon Lotz (Hansie, Faan se Trein), Elton Landrew (Die ek, Anna, Dryfsand, 7de Laan), Ephraim Gordon (Class Act), Danny Ross (Broken Vows, Suidooster), David Manuel (The Outsiders, Noem My Skollie), and Amrain Ismail-Essop (This Life, Forgiveness) can also be seen in the movie.

Telestream celebrates 20th anniversary

From its global headquarters in Nevada City, California, to its six worldwide offices, Telestream kicks off a year of celebration for its 20th anniversary.

For the last two decades, Telestream has been at the forefront of innovation in the digital video industry, pioneering file-based video transcoding and high-quality media exchange over IP networks. The company has been profitable since 2001 and has experienced consistent revenue growth every year since. This has allowed Telestream to finance seven strategic acquisitions to expand its transcoding and workflow expertise while entering the live streaming, QC, video analytics and service assurance spaces.

Today, the company is the recognised leader in the media and entertainment technology industry, with a wide-ranging portfolio of products for delivering video over any network. With the recent acquisition of IneoQuest, a leader in video quality monitoring and analytics solutions for content distribution, Telestream is uniquely positioned to enable customers to deliver the highest possible video quality to their viewers, on any device.

The company’s CEO, Scott Puopolo, attributes much of Telestream’s success to the company’s deep-rooted spirit of creativity, its bright and committed employees worldwide, and a consistent and solid vision from its management team, many of whom –  including CTO Shawn Carnahan and VP of Engineering Steve Tilly– have been with the company since its inception.

“Telestream offers its customers a very clear proposition: an established track record of innovation and excellence, backed by a solid financial base from which we’re developing the next generation of digital video solutions,” stated Puopolo. “We are extremely relevant to our customers’ businesses, and we take that role very seriously.”

A vision for the future

Looking ahead, streaming – both VOD and live – are at the core of Telestream’s development plans, leveraging technologies such as machine learning and containerised infrastructure that will support monetisation and revenue generation in a highly customised media delivery system. With the migration to IP, virtualisation, and cloud workflows, partnerships and strategic alliances have never been more important. Broadcasters and content distributors will need to form new relationships with vendors that encompass completely new business models, not just new products.

“Thanks to streaming technology and OTT delivery platforms, video is rapidly becoming the de facto mode of communication in our societies, from media and entertainment to education and corporate communications, and many more applications we’ve only just begun to explore. Going forward, consumers will expect a quality of streaming experience that matches traditional broadcast television, and convenience that exceeds it. Creating new technologies that support a high-quality video streaming experience is our focus as we move into our next 20 years, building long-term on the success of the last two decades,” concludes Carnahan.

Autoscript and Autocue products on display at the 2018 NAB Show

Autoscript at 2018 NAB Show: Intelligent Prompting

Autoscript will highlight its all-new Intelligent Prompting family featuring the EPIC-IP19XL teleprompter with integrated 24-inch talent monitor and WinPlus-IP prompting software. The award-winning IP range is now delivering to broadcasters worldwide and will be extended with new controllers and additional monitors at the 2018 NAB Show.

Intelligent Prompting is the broadcast industry’s first completely IP-enabled, end-to-end teleprompting solution. Intelligent Prompting completely reinvents prompting workflows so that devices can be located anywhere, delivering the ease of use and foolproof redundancy that modern broadcast operations need. The inclusion of video outputs/inputs allows users to transition to IP at their own pace, while significant hardware improvements further enhance the solution. Since Intelligent Prompting units require no counterbalance in most situations, they are up to 50 percent lighter than prompting solutions that do require counterbalance. Combined with increased stability, this weight reduction eases payload issues for camera supports and makes the on-camera teleprompters ideal for robotic installations.

Autocue at 2018 NAB Show: Teleprompter Leadership

At the 2018 NAB Show, Autocue will showcase its complete range of broadcast teleprompters, ranging from iPad solutions to the company’s Master Series of both 17-inch and 20-inch teleprompters. Autocue will also feature the new QBox v6 intelligent scroll engine. Designed for the company’s QMaster prompting software, QBox v6 offers dual HD-SDI outputs for delivering video to the prompter monitor.

“The NAB Show is always an exciting opportunity to unveil our latest innovations from both Autoscript and Autocue, and this year is no exception. We’ll be showing the latest enhancements to Autoscript’s award-winning Intelligent Prompting, a truly revolutionary approach to teleprompting designed completely around an intelligent IP-enabled workflow that’s been incredibly well received. We’ll also have developments in the Autocue range, making the Vitec Group booth a must-see for anyone who wants to see the best of the teleprompting industry,” said Ginny Grove, Product Marketing manager at Autoscript/Autocue.

Can pay TV stations compete in the digital era? Justin Hewelt, global director for PayMedia, UK certainly thinks so. Hewelt is in South Africa this week to speak at the IAB SA Digital Summit on 1 March. We caught up with him to get his views on the pay TV world in a Netflix era and other things South African marketers need to know.

Q: Pay TV stations in South Africa are losing subscribers hand over fist to digital services like Netflix – is this a global trend and how can Pay TV companies work to counter this?

JH: I’m not sure that pay TV is losing subscribers ‘hand over fist’ but consumer choice is increasing and pay TV has to adapt to a new economy. This means a more competitive market, more flexibility and a wider range of price-points and options than has been the case to-date. The outlook is positive for the industry and consumers alike, but here are some of the factors I believe will be critical as we go forward:

Content is critical – Consumers now have more choices when it comes to accessing TV services, be they live or on-demand. Despite the arrival of services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, and growth of free-to-view TV services, the impact of ‘cord-cutting’ – an American term for when customers cancel their cable subscription – really depends on the content proposition of pay TV operators. Operators that invest in original content are better placed to transition to the new economy than operators who are simply re-transmitters of international channels or telcos whose primary concern is to drive connections rather than entertain audiences.  Netflix has a role to play in delivering and commissioning original content, but Netflix alone, or even Netflix and Amazon combined cannot serve the needs of all consumers.

Live vs On Demand – Analysing consumer trends, TV viewing behaviours tend to depend on age group, with younger audiences now watching fewer hours of live TV. However, in all segments, live TV viewing still dominates. Major shows like X-Factor, The Voice, Dancing with the Stars and other ‘shiny floor’ formats continue to deliver large live audiences, as does sports, news and other live programming. These live shows also drive significant engagement on social media. VOD usage continues to grow as fixed and wireless broadband access becomes less expensive and consumers adopt advanced set-tops, tablets and smartphones.
The operators best placed to challenge Netflix and other new entrants are those who embrace on-demand, and who allow consumers to access the content they want, when they want, on the devices they want. Much of the exclusive on-demand series available on leading premium services like HBO, Sky, FOXTEL or DStv are only available live and on-demand on those platforms, and are unlikely ever to appear on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or other emerging OTT services.  The pay TV industry is adapting as the landscape changes, developing new ways of delivering advertising and finding ways to target audiences across both live and on-demand programming.

Global vs local –  Despite continued investment in original content, and a gradual broadening of genres (Netflix recently launched chat-show formats) Netflix is a global business that has to plough a middle ground. It commissions content in a narrow set of genres which it knows will play well internationally, as well commissioning specific shows for specific markets or languages. However, Netflix’s investments are strategic and designed to win new customers. Outside the US it is not able to invest in the wide range of local content that audiences have come to expect from the more established pay TV businesses.

Insight – Much has been made of Netflix’s data capabilities and the insight they have into viewing behaviours. However, local pay TV businesses, particularly those who have connected set-top boxes and streaming services like Sky Go and DStv NOW are best placed to understand the viewing behaviours of their subscribers across multiple channels and VOD titles. Their understanding of customers, tastes and preferences are potentially far greater than the genre-specific narrow view of many emerging OTT propositions. Traditional operators that use insight will be in the best position to understand not just data, but local cultural trends and behaviours and evolve shows that those audiences are likely to respond to. They are also best placed to match audiences, households and even individuals with advertisers and adapt different creative executions for different segments to help advertisers maximise efficiency, engagement, effectiveness and return on investment.

Q: What is the one big trend in the global media space that South African marketers need to know about in 2018?

JH: Data and data privacy. South African marketers need to work with their clients and advertising platforms to understand how to build a sustainable insight and data capability, and through this, better understand the needs of consumers and the customer journey to build more effective and efficient ways of advertising.

Building a capability now, ensuring information is captured, stored and managed in sustainable ways, and learning through trials and A/B testing will help the industry better position itself for an increasingly complex future. At the same time, the European Union is setting out clear regulations around data privacy through the General Data Protection Regulation (GDRP) and it is likely that these regulations will inform regulation in other markets as global businesses seek to ensure compliance worldwide. Understanding how to build more targeted campaigns based on data and insight, whilst respecting regulations and standards around data privacy will enhance return on investment, and through regulatory compliance, will help to ensure ongoing consumer trust.
