CREATIVE CIRCLE AD OF YEAR 2005

COMMENTS BY CHAIRPERSON – ALISTAIR KING

The judging methodology used this year was the same as last year. The 16 judges were asked to put their proverbials on the line, so to speak, by choosing one, and only one winner per category. The results were tallied, and in instances where there was a tie, judges re-voted on the pieces of work that were neck and neck. This happened in two of the categories.
I’m told that all five winners of Ad of the Year had all previously won their respective Ad of the Months, so it seems the cream does always rise.

In the TV category, it was great to see (probably) one of the lowest budget commercials ever win convincingly. The SABC “Education Maths” featuring Brendan Jack never seems to tire and never fails to evoke a guttural laugh from a panel.

In what can only be termed a bleak year for radio, the Coca Cola/Twist campaign won easily receiving nearly every vote from the panel.

Outdoor was a particularly hard category to judge. The panel found themselves having to judge great posters against great ambient ideas against great classic outdoor billboards. In the end, the novelty factor of Simba Ghost Pops won the day, beating Doom posters in the re-vote.

In what must be the first instance of an Afrikaans campaign ever winning Ad of the Year, The Pendoring Campaign pipped VW Golf and The Design Indaba in a re-vote for the magazine laurels.

And finally, serious subject matter in the form of World Press Freedom Day, appropriately won in the newspaper category.

Overall, it’s great to see a South African flavour permeating the work. Even the winners tend to suggest that work celebrating our cultural foibles is being rewarded.

To all the winners, Congratulations. And thank you once again to our sponsors SAfm. Over and out. Onwards and upwards.

DFO Training Indaba

0

Key film industry players are to meet in Durban this month at a time of unprecedented growth for the city’s film industry. High on their agenda will be thrashing out strategies to take maximum advantage of the boom.

The Durban Film Office (DFO) will host the 2006 Film & Television Training Indaba at Suncoast Casino on 16 and 17 March. The Durban film industry has experienced a phenomenal 41% growth in production activity over the past three years, from big budget Hollywood blockbusters, to a steady stream of local and international commercials and features.

It’s clear that Durban and the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province’s film friendly reputation is spreading like wildfire. The economic spin-offs have been huge, with hundreds of millions of rands estimated to have been injected into the local economy.Says the DFO’s CEO Mandle Ndimande. “This is a perfect time for key role players to meet and discuss strategies to gain maximum advantage from all the local and international film activity in the region.”

The Durban Film Office is the film promotion arm of the eThekwini Municipality.Lively exchanges are guaranteed with topics like the pros and cons of applying the controversial Nigerian film model to the local industry and the ongoing debate over film versus High Definition (HD) formats.

Also sure to come under the spotlight will the perceived gap between Durban training levels and actual skills required on film productions, with national and international standards pushing the bar higher with every production. Related to this is the topic of how to increase the numbers of Durban cast and crew employed on locally filmed foreign and South African productions.

“The office is thrilled by the success of the BAFTA nomination of the short film Lucky. The film was shot entirely in Durban using local crew and cast, some with first time experience, and that has assured the international players of the film industry that Durban is more than capable of handling world class productions,” saidNdimande. But there remains a perception among Cape Town and Johannesburg production companies that Durban lacked experience and skills.

“This not only limits opportunities for the local industry, but also acts as a deterrent to filming in Durban due to the added cost of providing accommodation and travel for Cape Town and Johannesburg production services. We are confident that this Indaba will prove a turning point in Durban’s relationship with the wider South African film industry. This is an ideal opportunity for interested and qualified people to make a contribution to the future of film in this city and province,” noted Ndimande.

PROGRAMME

The 2006 Film & Television Training Indaba will provide local production services, training providers and students an opportunity to workshop the issue of skills development with key organizations such as the Commercial Producers Association, National Film & Video Foundation, South African Scriptwriters Association, Association for Cinematographers South Africa and the MAPPP Seta. The Indaba will run for two days and will include presentations from key role-players and panel discussions.

  • Skills Development and the National Skills Framework – Upgradingexisting skills and addressing past imbalances.
  • Training Providers – Creating a register of existing providersandprogram’son offer.
  • Skills Diversity – Establishing industry needs in terms oftechnical training and business skills.
  • Setting the Standard – Accreditation and recognition of acquiredskills and knowledge.
  • Access – Focusing on the cost of training.
  • Format – Film vs. HD and the applicability of theNigerian film model in the Durban context.
  • OBJECTIVES AND CONCEPT

The main objective behind the concept is to firstly encourage the local industry to create and maintain a platform from which industry can voice its needs and challenges to local and national government organizations and to address the need for a unified strategy in terms of skills development in the sector.Secondly, to invite key role-players to acknowledge training needs in our local industry within the National context.

The channel seeks to engage the services of an experienced and/or new producer, director, writer(s) and production companies to develop a contemporary, fresh, dynamic and credible South African drama series. This has been necessitated by an evolving market environment and a gap that has been identified within the emerging market in the LSM 8-10 income bracket. Commissioning Editor Bongiwe Selane explains exactly what M-Net Original Productions is looking for: “We want a local drama that will appeal mostly to our developing audience. However, the tone of the drama needs to be inclusive of our other audiences in S.A and across Africa. Most importantly, this series must aim to grow and appeal to M-Net’s developing audience.”

The backdrop from which the story is told should be relevant, interesting and reflect the present South African realities. The proposal should be original. The stories need to somehow touch the lives of this audience and reflect back to them the world they inhibit. 2. A Detailed treatment and approach

    5. A preliminary production budget.

The proposed series should appeal to all adults, targeting the LSM 8 -10 bracket, and feature English and an indigenous Language.

Included in the proposal should be:

Detailed CV’s of key creative personnel that could be allocated to the project. Director, Producer, Script Writer(s) etc.

    • Location of registered Production Office
    • Facilities to be used – origination, post-production and laboratory.

UK, SA & Canada collaborate on disaster movie

    0

The $24m production, Flood, marks the feature film debut of international London-based production/distribution company Power and is being done in association with South Africa’s Moonlighting Films and Muse Entertainment Enterprises of Canada.

Set for theatrical release in early 2007, Flood is a disaster thriller about London flooding and will shoot for 13 weeks on location in London and in studios in SA. It is produced by Power’s Justin Bodle and independent producer Peter McAleese. The co-producers are Michael Prupas (Muse Entertainment) and Philip Key and Genevieve Hofmeyr for Moonlighting.

Power is responsible for some of the UK’s most critically acclaimed mini-series over the past three years, including International Emmy winning Henry VIII and Colditz for ITV and Archangel, Casanova and The Virgin Queen, which were all co-productions with the BBC.

Announcing the project, Justin Bodle said: “After three successful years producing high end quality television drama for the global TV market, the move into feature films was a natural one for Power.

“Flood is a very ambitious project based on our capital city being hit by the catastrophic flooding predicted by scientists. It is highly topical with global warming and rising sea levels creating a real threat to London. It is a very fast moving thriller and we are delighted to have so much great talent attached.”

Timely yet terrifying, Flood predicts the unthinkable. When a raging storm coincides with high seas it unleashes a colossal surge, which travels mercilessly down England’s East Coast and into the River Thames. Overwhelming the Barrier, torrents of water pour into the city. The lives of millions of Londoners are at stake. Top marine engineers and barrier experts Rob, his ex-wife Sam and his father Leonard Morrison, have only a few hours to save the city from total devastation. A real probability in a real location. It is not a question of if, but when, London floods.

The cast includes Robert Carlyle who came to prominence for his role of Begbie in Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting. He won a BAFTA award for his role in 1997’s The Full Monty and has since featured in productions including The 51st State, Angela’s Ashes and The World is Not Enough.

Jessalyn Gilsig is best known for her role of Gina Russo in the hit TV series Nip/Tuck. Tom Courtenay won a BAFTA award for his role in The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, a Golden Globe and Academy Award nomination for The Dresser and an Academy Award nomination for Doctor Zhivago. His distinguished list of credits also includes Nicholas Nickleby and Last Orders. David Suchet (Poirot, The Way We Live Now, Get Carman) also stars alongside Joanne Whalley, Nigel Planer and Tom Hardy.

The director is Tony Mitchell who is making his feature film directorial debut following highly acclaimed drama-documentaries which include Supervolcano and Ancient Egyptians, which won a BAFTA Award for Best Photography.
