The SABC TV Network is proud to announce its gold sponsorship of the WGSA Muse
Awards 2016. The WGSA Muse Awards is a platform which recognises the talent,
hard work and achievements of the performance writers of the Writers’ Guild South
Africa. Now in its third successful year, the awards ceremony will take place on
Saturday, 2 April 2016 at the Soweto Theatre, Johannesburg.
“The SABC, as a public broadcaster, recognises the need to celebrate and reward
key stakeholders in the broadcasting industry and as such, the WGSA Muse Awards
allows the organisation to be associated with a platform which seeks to recognise
and celebrate writers in the industry. Through this sponsorship, our aim is to ensure
that we support the celebration of South Africa’s leading performance writers, and
invest in the development of South African performance writers while participating
in the future of the local film, TV, radio, theatre and new media industries,’ said
Verona Duwarkah, group executive, SABC Television.
The WGSA Muse Awards run nationally and recognise talent in the following
categories:
• Feature Film
• TV Drama/Soap
• Radio Drama
• TV Comedy/Sitcom
• Animation/Web Series
• Short Film
• Stage Play
The judging phase of the awards is jury-based and looks at concept and theme,
characterisation, genre, language and style, story and structure, pace, dialogue,
professional format and presentation. After which finalists in each category are
selected. All finalists receive a WGSA Muse Awards Finalist Certificate. Winners are
awarded the specially designed WGSA Muse Trophy along with their Winners
Certificate.
The WGSA Muse Awards is the brainchild of former WGSA Chairperson, Harriet
Meier and was launched in 2013. “The primary objective of the WGSA Muse Awards
is to recognise the hard work done by our members in the SA film, TV and
entertainment industry. It is an award by writers for writers, which finally shines
the spotlight on the often forgotten custodians of SA arts and culture,’ commented
Meier.
