“My Idol’ was the theme for the M-Net’s Idols Spectacular on 6 October when the top nine contestants performed songs by their musical heroes to a live audience at the Moreleta Park NG Church in Pretoria.
Voting results will be revealed on Tuesday 8 October and fans have until 22h00 on Monday 7 October to secure their favourite singer a position in the top eight.
Chrystaline Nair sang Strongerby her musical idol, Kelly Clarkson, which received mixed reactions from the judges.
Musa Sukwena was inspired by local musical icon Ringo Madlingozi and the judges applauded her for a good interpretation and authentic performance of the song Ndiyagodola.
The judges agreed that The Scientist by Coldplay was a good choice for Benjamin Tainton but said that his performance had moments of problematic pitching.
Brenden Ledwaba gave a good effort when he sang Her Heart by Anthony Hamilton but the judges agreed that it was not his strongest performance.
Christina Williams was criticised for her delivery of Try by Pink as the choice of her song was overshadowed by Americanised phrasing.
Though the judges agreed that Innocent Mabushe was the most versatile performer in the group, they felt his singing could have been better during his performance of Paradise by Coldplay.
According to the judges, Zoe Zana gave a striking performance of Love The Way You Lie by Rihanna, whichlacked consistency while Bunny Mojaja was said to have an effortless style and unique interpretation of her song Proud Mary by Tina Turner.
Performers battle it out for their chance to be South Africa’s next Idol on M-Net and Mzansi Magic on Sundays at 17h30 and Tuesdays at 19h30.
