The Prodigal, a short film directed by Michael-John Phillip from Cape Town, was
screened at the recent National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY) in Seattle,
Washington. Phillip was one of four South African filmmakers to make the line-up.
NFFTY is the world’s largest film festival for youth and showcases the talent of
directors, who are 22 years and younger, from around the world. Along with The
Prodigal, NFFTY showed 214 other films over the four-day film festival. Chosen from
over 700 entries, these films represented young directors from over 30 US States and 20
different countries.
Says Phillip: “It’s great that festivals like NFFTY give young filmmakers an opportunity
to take risks and celebrate their unique stories’.
Experimental in nature, The Prodigal centres on identity and grace and stars local actor
Kyle St. John Peters, who portrays the dramatic difficulties of youth. The film previously
screened at The Love Bombs 10-day film festival in Cape Town.
