SCREEN AFRICA EXCLUSIVE: Afrikaans pay-TV broadcaster kykNET launched a new breakfast show called Dagbreek at The Westcliff Hotel in Johannesburg on Monday 22 October. Dagbreek will go on air on 5 November and will broadcast live every weekday between 06h00 and 08h00.
KykNET head, Karen Meiring, noted that there has never been a live Afrikaans breakfast show in South Africa. “This is also a first for M-Net, so we feel like pioneers,’ said Meiring.
She added that they have chosen their presenters carefully to represent a full spectrum of their viewers. Presenters include Bettie Kemp, Elma Smit, Harald Richter, Rozanne McKenzie, Pierre Breytenbach and Dalen Lance.
Executive producer, Wim Steyn, noted that breakfast TV can’t be generic. “We will have a very strong focus on business, news, current affairs, agriculture and politics. However, there will also be a balance of lifestyle, including food and exercise, as well as art and entertainment.
“We’ve got 24.com as a news partner, so we will have newspaper editors coming into our studio daily and having in-depth conversations about the news of the day. We’ve also got SuperSport as our sport partner.’
Steyn described the programme as easy-going and friendly, yet business-orientated.
The show will be broadcast from Stark Studios in Randburg, with three static studio cameras and one roaming, handheld camera. Dagbreek also has two teams – one in Johannesburg and one in Cape Town – that will shoot inserts on Canon 5D cameras.
