South African public broadcaster the SABC has released a statement to express their sadness at the passing of South African media icon Zwelakhe Sisulu.

The statement reads: Mr Sisulu was a prominent journalist, politician and businessman who was involved in various South African industries such as the broadcasting media.

Mr Sisulu holds a special place in the history of the SABC and the country as a whole, as he was the first black Group Chief Executive of the organisation from 1994 until 1997. He steered the organisation after the apartheid era and helped transform it from a state broadcaster into the public service broadcaster it is today.

The SABC Board and Management on behalf of the corporation sends our condolences and prayers to the Sisulu family, during this difficult time and would like to comfort the family with the thought that Mr Sisulu played an important role in society and his endeavours and contribution to South Africa will never be forgotten.
