South Africa’s Minister of Communications Dina Pule will launch the awareness campaign for the country’s migration from analogue broadcasting to digital terrestrial television (DTT) in Motswedimosa, Kimberly, Northern Cape on 3 October 2012.

The launch marks the first phase of an awareness campaign that plans to create understanding around South Africa’s digital migration process.

The Department of Communications (DoC) will demonstrate the different types of technology that will be needed by the communities during the migration process. Three areas in the Northern Cape were identified by the Department for the demonstration based on the type of technology accessible in the area.

Motswedimosa township, near Kimberley, will receive DTT signals, while the Carnavon and Williston, located around the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project, will receive Direct-To-Home (DTH) satellite signals.

The Department has planned a number of activities during the week leading up to the main day of the launch. Four Post Offices were identified for the demonstration of the technologies throughout the week namely; Williston, Carnavon, Central Kimberly and Mankurwane( Galeshewe). Minister Pule will also afford community members in the Northern Cape, an opportunity to interact with her live on the Local Community Radio stations via the community stations link through Radio Teemaneng source.

DoC has partnered with the SABC, South African Post Office (SAPO), parastatal signal distributor Sentech and Universal Services and Access Agency of South Africa (USAASA), who are major role players in the process of digital migration; to also demonstrate the signal, transmission, subsidy schemes and criterion and the set-top box distribution processes until the switch off as well as the benefits for all South Africans.
