SABC Education’s Shift will be broadcast live from Kimberley in the Northern Cape on 30 and 31 July at 13h30 on SABC1.
Shift presenters Rhulani Baloyi and Aaron Moloisi will discuss issues affecting the lives of young people in the province. They kick-start their visit with a show giving young people in the region a platform to talk about their deepest desires to contribute to South Africa’s democracy. They will also celebrate the achievements, lifestyles and unique culture of the region.
The visit will end on 31 July when the hosts talk to the community of Kimberley about the on-going battle to combat Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS); the damages of which are irreversible but preventable. Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can damage the embryo and foetus as it develops, leading to a characteristic pattern of malformation which is identified as FAS. Poor nutritional intake and smoking during pregnancy are additional adverse factors which probably aggravate the ill-effects of alcohol on the infant.
