According to comedy channel Comedy Central (DStv Channel 122), they have seen a huge reaction on Twitter and other social media sites to the news of the upcoming Comedy Central Roast of Steve Hofmeyr.
Following the announcement the official Twitter site for Comedy Central in Africa saw its biggest ever spike in new Twitter followers, while “Steve Hofmeyr’ trended on Twitter for large parts of the day. At the same time, the Facebook site for Comedy Central increased its existing reach by 600% as users clamoured for news about the roast.
Among the key topics being discussed in the twitterverse was the identities of the celebrity Roastmaster and Roasters who will be invited to heap scorn and ridicule on Roastee Steve Hofmeyr. Among the names suggested by the eager Tweeters were Barry Hilton, Chris Forrest, Loyiso Gola, Trevor Noah, Deep Fried Man, Khanyi Mbau, Tumi Morake, John Vlismas, Nik Rabinovitz, Mark Banks, ventriloquist Martin Evans, Trevor Gumbi, DJ Fresh, Kuli Roberts, Kobus Galloway, Casper de Vries and ex-Springbok coach Peter de Villiers. Many Tweeters had suggestions for future South African Roastees they’d like to see in the roast hotseat including Julius Malema and Nelson Mandela.
Comedy Central will reveal the names of further participants on 23 July. The Roast will take place at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, Johannesburg on 11 September. A limited number of tickets for the event are expected to go on sale via Computicket on 23 July.
