Otelo Burning, the new South African film that has created a buzz on the international film festival circuit, opened at the local box office on 11 May with 29 prints and made R83,336 over the weekend.
Two other South African films continue their successful runs at the box office: Angus Buchan’s Ordinary People (8 prints) has been on release for six weeks and has made R2.4m, while Semi-Soet (8 prints) has been on release for 13 weeks and has amassed R9.6m.
The biggest earner over the weekend was the Hollywood blockbuster The Avengers (including 3D) (100 prints), which has made a staggering R26.6m in just three weeks.
