The Western Cape judges’s audition for Idols Season 8 got off on a high note at the Table Bay Hotel in the V&A Waterfront on Tuesday, 20 March when eight contestants in a row emerged from the judging room clutching the prized Golden Ticket. In total, 29 Idols contestants from the Western Cape are through to the next round in Sun City next month.

“Cape Town has always delivered quality contestants,’ says Idols judge Gareth Cliff, “and today was no exception. We saw some really talented people and some really… odd ones! Cape Town – you’ve done it again!’

“Many interesting, colourful characters took a shot at fame,’ Unathi Msengana confirmed. “And some of them were even talented!’ she joked. “And to conduct auditions against this incredible backdrop behind us – it just makes everything sound even better!’ she added.

Two weeks ago the Idols judges auditioned Durban contestants against the dramatic backdrop of the shark tank at uShaka Marine World in Durban and today they enjoyed the Mother City’s most breathtaking views of the harbour and Table Mountain as their background.

“I was pleasantly surprised by the turnout in Cape Town today, in terms of personality, looks, the vibe, and of course the voices,’ said Idols host and co-producer ProVerb, who met each triumphant and each disappointed contestant outside the judges’s room. “I was encouraged when the judges sent through so many winners in the morning, but I also know that they were being very objective.’

Especially Idols’s strictest judge Randall Abrahams. “My fellow judges were far too lenient, in my opinion,’ he grumbled. “These contestants better be very impressive at Theatre Week.’

The singers who made the grade today will join other finalists from around the country at Theatre Week in Sun City in April. But first it will be Jozi’s turn to vie for those Golden Tickets at the Johannesburg Judges’ Auditions at the Sandton Convention Centre on Saturday, 7 April.

Season 8 of Idols is a co-production between M-Net and Mzansi Magic and will be broadcast on both channels from 3 June 2012.
