MARTIN CHEMHERE writes… Zimbabwean feature film Playing Warriors this week plays at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles, where it is nominated for an award for Best Director (First Feature Film).

The film has also been accepted to the New York African Film Festival and will screen at the Sonoma Film Festival in California in April.

Back home in Zimbabwe the film is screening at Rainbow Cinemas in Harare and Bulawayo for the whole month of February.

Playing Warriors is a sexy comedy set in Harare and explores the challenges faced by four friends as they try to balance the traditional expectations of society and their families with the realities of being a modern, independent, young woman in today’s Zimbabwe.

Director Rumbi Katedza has just returned from the Goteborg International Film Festival in Sweden where the film had its first outing for an international audience. “The audience was intrigued’ said Katedza. “They came out in their numbers to watch the film and wanted to learn more about Zimbabwe.’

The film features an all local cast and crew and a killer soundtrack showcasing local Zimbabwean talent.
