South Africa’s Department of Communications (DoC) will host a regional two-day seminar on 6 and 7 June in Johannesburg to prepare for the 22nd session of the Special Committee on Copyrights and Related Rights (SCCR) and to lobby and consolidate Africa’s position regarding the treaty on the protection of broadcasting organisations. Secondly, the seminar will raise awareness on signal piracy and share lessons and strategies to abolish signal piracy on cross boarder level.
The workshop is aimed at policy makers, broadcast engineers, regulators, broadcasters, IP specialists, enforcement agencies and content rights owners and specialists. The Deputy Minister of Communications, Honourable Obed Bapela, will deliver an opening address at the Regional Seminar on Signal Piracy.
The first day of the seminar will discuss: Understanding Signal Piracy. For this purpose, experts will provide various dimensions and perspective to signal piracy. The second day will look at the ongoing processes at World Intellectual Property Organisations regarding the draft of treaty on the protection of broadcasting organisations. In this regard, the African countries will work towards consolidating positions in preparation for the forthcoming 22nd session of Special Committee on Copyrights and Related Rights taking place in Geneva on June 15-24 2011.
