More people in America now get news online than they do from newspapers, according to the Project for Excellence in Journalism’s State of the Media report published this week.
According to The Wrap television was still the number one platform in 2010 in terms of adult news consumption, but the trend line shows that the gap is closing. The Internet was the number two platform behind television – with 46% saying they get news online at least three times a week, surpassing newspapers (40%) for the first time.
Another milestone, according to the report, is that more money was spent on online advertising than on newspaper advertising in 2010. Online advertising overall grew 13.9% to $25.8b against newspaper’s estimated $22.8b in print ad revenue.
“In a world where consumers decide what news they want and how they want to get it, the future belongs to those who understand the audience best, and who can leverage that knowledge with advertisers,’ says Project for Excellence in Journalism Director Tom Rosenstiel. “Increasingly that knowledge exists outside of news companies.’
