A campaign on social networking site Facebook prompted the openly gay Irish independent senator David Norris to run for president in Ireland. Nearly 1,000 Facebook members called on Norris to stand.
Norris is currently ahead of all other possible candidates according to two recent opinion polls. Should he be elected he will be Ireland’s first gay president. Ireland is traditionally reputed to be one of the most conservative Catholic nations in Europe. Norris himself is a practising Anglican.
The candidate told The Guardian that he thought it very important to use modern technology in political campaigns and referenced America’s President Obama’s successful use of the Internet to help him win the election.
