The Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) compliant Eastern Cape farm, Oudrif Estate, has purchased decoders from South Africa’ s newest pay-TV service, TopTV, and is sponsoring 50% of the cost for its workers, who contribute the remainder.
The estate deals with the logistics of getting the decoders installed on behalf of the employees. The monthly subscriptions are the responsibility of the employees either by way of debit order or direct payment.
Says a spokesperson from Oudrif, “We know that knowledge is power and we feel that the programme offering on TopTV is a fun and interesting way for our employees and their families to broaden their knowledge base.’ He continues, “We believe that this incentive will enrich and empower our people’s lives, giving them hope and in turn a better future.’
Oudrif Estate produces fruit for sale to Pick “n Pay, Woolworths, Checkers and Shoprite as well as the export market . It is also a member of Fair Trade, a movement which aims to enhance trading conditions for small scale businesses, improve labour conditions for employees and empower communities through ethical and sustainable trade. The Fair Trade Joint Body is the fund which receives and administers the proceeds from the sales of the fruit, and have embarked on other initiatives with Oudrif, on behalf of the farm workers.
