According to a report by international research company NSR, satellite broadband access was one of the biggest success stories of 2009. North America became the first region in the world to top one million subscribers, with Europe likely to reach 100,000 subscribers in the next few months.
NSR’s report, Broadband Satellite Markets 9th Edition, projects that broadband VSAT networking, satellite broadband access, and broadband trunking & backhaul services will generate nearly US$8.8 billion by 2019, which is a 135% increase over 2009.
The report points out that the core economics of satellite broadband access services will change with the launch of second generation high throughput satellites like ViaSat-1, KaSat and Jupiter. In addition, several governments are launching national initiatives to provide universal broadband access for their citizens.
In terms of broadband VSAT networking services in 2009, the Middle East & North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa managed steady growth despite economic and capacity issues.
