As from 14 March, SABC2 will start broadcasting the new Ikon South Africa short documentary series on Sundays at 9pm. Produced by Rainbow Circle Films, the series is a compelling collection of short films from South Africa, Africa and the rest of the world.
There are 30 films in this series, from Paraguay, India, Finland, Brazil, Sweden, Uganda, Nigeria, South Africa and Belgium. The stories cross continents and bring together a multitude of voices and filmmakers on this exciting broadcast platform.
Among the titles are Durban-based Nishendra Moodley’s Contesting Race, which is set in the world of teenage ethnic beauty pageantry. Fellow South African Lisa Swart’s The Pioneer of Paraguay is about an Afrikaner who emigrated to Paraguay in 1976 and feels alienated from his roots.
Beyond Slience by Belgian Michel de Wouters shows two people setting out to cross the Arctic Ocean and coming to terms with the fragility of the planet.
In The Broken Land, Indian filmmaker Debalina Majunder questions her country’s independence, the quest for freedom and the lingering pain of partition.
