Towards an open market for digital content distribution

On 4 December in Hollywood, the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE) announced it had reached key milestones toward establishing the first open market for digital content distribution.

DECE is a consortium comprising the likes of Hollywood studios such as Paramount, Warner Bros., and Fox, as well as technology companies such as Sony, Panasonic, Comcast, Intel, Paramount, Toshiba and Thompson. Notably absent from the consortium are Disney and Apple.

The consortium has reached agreement on a Common File Format – an open specification for digital entertainment that will be used by all participating content providers, services and device manufacturers.

DECE has also apprived five Digital Rights Management Solutions which will be DECE-compatible.

Full technical specifications will be available in the first half of 2010.
