All those in broadband-starved South Africa might be interested to hear that just how much spectrum is needed for America’s “broadband nation’ is still unclear, according to the country’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC). One thing the FCC is sure of, however, is that the wireless industry will need more spectrum.
Broadcasting ; Cable reports that the FCC said on 18 November that it doubted it could identify the required spectrum to meet America’s needs. Some broadcasters are reportedly willing to give up some of their spectrum, however, it takes about nine years to recover spectrum. It also raises the question of how broadcasters will be able to offer HDTV and mobile TV services, if they release some of their existing spectrum.
The FCC stressed that a lot of work was required by all parts of “the broadband ecosystem’ in identifying the spectrum and using it more efficiently.
