SABC interim board chairperson Irene Charnley told the South African parliamentary communications portfolio committee in Cape Town on 3 November that the crisis-stricken public broadcaster would only start turning a profit by 2012. It aimed to settle its debts (currently estimated at R910m) by the end of the 2014 financial year.
In the meantime the interim board is contesting a R1bn contract as part of its examination of the SABC’s finances. Details of the deal could not be revealed at this stage but Charnley said there might be two criminal charges involved.
