Having blitzed the American box office two weeks in a row, South African Neill Blomkamp’s blockbuster District 9 predictably took top spot in its opening weekend in South Affrica (28 to 30 August) with a huge R2.1m. Produced by Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings fame, the film continues to get rave reviews and excellent word of mouth.
Another South African film, the indigenous language Izulu Lami (My Secret Sky) took seventh spot on the Ster-Kinekor Top 8 over the weekend, having previously made the sixth spot for the week of 21 to 27 August. It has made R174,564 thus far.
