On 21 April, a high-powered delegation of Hollywood heavyweights met with the US Senate in Washington to convince them of the central role the industry plays in the economy and how it could aid economic recovery.
Included in the Hollywood delegation were top executives from Fox Filmed Entertainment, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Pictures, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros. Entertainment, and the Motion Picture Association of America.
The Hollywood lobby was in direct response to the fact that in February this year the industry lost $246m in tax breaks when the Republican government didn’t include it in the country’s economic bailout plan. The decision makers had been swayed by the fact that January’s box office figures were so good they broke records. They concluded that the film biz was immune to the effects of the recession.
