The Soweto Writers Centre (SWC) is calling for aspirant writers in Gauteng, North West and Mpumalanga to register for the 2009 Film and Television Writers Program, a comprehensive course designed for beginner scriptwriters. Registration will close on Friday, 6 February at 4pm.
“The three-months long program is a preparatory course for first time writers. On completion writers will be selected for the Sediba Writers Development Program to be presented in partnership with the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) later in the year,” says SWC director Basil Dube.
SWC was launched in 2006 in direct response to the growing need for the training of seasoned black script writers in South Africa. “We have created space and a creative platform for writers from disadvantaged and under-resourced communities,” notes Dube.
The centre is currently in dialogue with potential partners for the establishment of a fully fledged film and television school in Soweto.
Dube explains: “Some of the main institutions we are currently engaging on this matter include CIDA City Campus, Cityvarsity, Johannesburg City Property and the Gauteng Department of Education. We have also started discussions with Felicia Mabuza–Suttle of Africa Channel currently based in Califonia, USA. This is a big project and we are trying to secure an international investor through Felicia.”
The Soweto Writers Centre will be launching its Playwrights and Actors Program in March 2009. This will be linked to the upcoming Soweto Theatre currently under construction.
