The annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) will be presented at a glittering event at Pretoria’s State Theatre on 7 February. Regarded as the local industry’s biggest honour, over 70 Golden Horn statuettes will be awarded during the evening.
Awards will be presented to individuals and productions in the categories of: Feature films, Documentary, Student and Short films, as well as TV Dramas, Soapies, Comedies, Reality, Gameshows, Wildlife shows, Talkshows, Magazine shows and News and Actuality Programmes, Animation, Variety shows and Sports Shows with the addition of Music Shows.
This year the viewers will play an important role as they cast their votes for their most popular genre, soapies. The public will also vote for best Soapie Hero/Heroin, Best Comic, Best Villain/Villainess and Best Dressed.
Other categories to look out for are the Best Newcomer award, that will be awarded to an individual who has recently entered the industry either in the technical or performance field and has displayed outstanding effort in their work. The Lifetime Achievement will be awarded to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the industry.
The judging panel of the SAFTA 2009 was overseen by Mandla Langa and Hanellie Bekker who served as Joint Chairs. All categories are audited by PriceWaterhouse Coopers.
Taking on the theme of the “South African Story”, the awards will be broadcast live on SABC2, 7 February 2009 at 20:00. (A Clive Morris Production).
