American TV network NBC has acquired a British TV drama production company for a reported $55.5m, according to Daily Variety. The company, Carnival, is one of the UK’s leading independent producers and has created 400 hours of popular drama for TV and cinema, both in the UK and the US.
An NBC executive was quoted in the article as saying that NBC is no longer solely focused on Hollywood and that the UK is a “huge market with a very large talent pool’.
Carnival has produced popular titles as Harley St, Agatha Christie’s Poirot and Hotel Babylon.
Some Hollywood insiders have interpreted NBC’s move as a way of counteracting the effects of another possible industry strike in Tinsel Town, should an agreement between the Screen Actors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers not materialise.
