More than 2.5bn movies were downloaded worldwide in 2005, a shocking 250% increase over the previous years, according to a study released by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) on 27 May.

The study further states that at any one time, 17 million people are downloading movies via peer-to-peer websites and that most of those movies had originally been camcorded in cinemas.

Meanwhile, the major Hollywood studios enjoyed an anti-piracy victory on 21 May, when they were awarded multi-million dollar judgements against the illegal linking websites Showstash.com and Cinematube.net, for infringement of popular copyrighted motion pictures and television shows.
