According to Business Day, the Freedom of Expression Institue (FXI) believes that the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board is not representative of South African society as a whole, as required by the Broadcasting Act, and has no journalists or working class representatives.
This comes after the Presidency’s repeated view that the appointment of the SABC board was handled correctly. This has set the Presidency on a potential collision course with the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu). Cosatu may challenge the composition of the SABC board in court.
According to media reports Mbeki appointed the new board despite protests from the tripartite alliance that the nomination process for board members has been flawed.
