The 65th Golden Globe Awards, hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and scheduled to take place on 13 January at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, will not enjoy its usual three-hour telecast on NBC due to the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike.
Instead, NBC plans to air a “scaled down’ news conference to announce the winners. The awards ceremony itself looks set to be devoid of any celebrities and nominees who are members of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), which has announced its support for the WGA cause.
According to the Los Angeles Times (8 December), NBC’s decision has sent “shock waves through the entertainment business’ as hopes were high that the WGA, NBC and Globes producer Dick Clark could reach a compromise. But the WGA has refused to allow its writers to work on the Globes, while SAG has advised its member to honor the WGA picket lines.
HFPA president Jorge Camara said in a statement: “We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favourite stars celebrating 2007’s outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television.’
Following NBC’s announcement, a spate of high budget Golden Globes after-parties were cancelled.
