The Channel O Spirit of Africa Music Video Awards, presented by Amarula Cream, will be staged at the Johannesburg City Hall on Thursday 11 October 2007. Last year’s awards ceremony saw Nigeria scoop nine awards in the 18 categories.
The highlight of the award ceremony is the Special Recognition Award. So far, the recipients of the Special Recognition Award include South African Kwaito star Zola, who received the award last year, while Hugh Masekela was honoured in 2005. Both Enoch Sontonga and Fela Kuti received posthumous awards in 2003.
The complete list of nominees will be announced during the first week in August.
Yolisa Phahle, Channel O’s General Manager says: “This year we are taking the awards to Johannesburg’s city centre and are working on making tickets available for the Channel O fans to attend and be part of this unprecedented celebration of 21st century African urban music. We plan to rock the city from start to finish and are in the process of booking the best live music that Africa has to offer.
