Students often come up against ridiculous regulations with reards to cross-institutional collaborations. Furthermore, many institutions do not encourage inter-disciplinary collaboration within their bounds, and rarely provide a public showcase for their student’s work.
Fed up with the lack of support within academic institutions, a group of Wits TV students decided to make a plan. They call themselves Coal Stove Productions, and have taken it upon themselves to organise monthly screenings of short films and television projects from Wits TV, AFDA Film School, and Tuks University. These have been running for the past three months. The news is spreading fast with the crowds growing rapidly with every event.
The events have been named “Off The Shelf”, as the aim is to not let student works disappear within the deep dusty corners of academia, but be shown publicly. The hope is that those who attend these events will network, and a culture of collaboration will form between young film makers. These events are entirely non-profit and rely on sponsorship and the hard work of the Coal Stove Productions team for their survival.
The next “Off The Shelf” event will take place this Sunday evening, 29 April at the Primi Piatti restaurant in the Zone @ Rosebank.
