From 7 April, the highs and lows of a two-month Everest expedition undertaken by “ordinary people’ will be broadcast in a new Discovery channel series on the DStv bouquet.
Everest: Beyond the Limit runs over six weeks and reveals one of the most controversial and deadly climbing seasons recorded on Mount Everest as expert Russell Brice leads a group of inexperienced climbers from all walks of life to the summit.
The show provides an in-depth and thought-provoking look at the challenges of an Everest attempt and the struggle for survival at 17 000 feet, with temperatures reaching minus 60 degrees Celsius, where a cough or sneeze could literally break one’s ribs. At 26 000 feet, kerosene no longer burns and each step requires 15 breaths or more.
As part of the launch of the series, an experiential marketing event emulated the Everest experience by climbing 8.85km at Lion’s Head in Cape Town, with Tibetan style tents at base camp, followed by Camp Two made up of Dry Ice. Camp Three included a climbing wall replicating the Northern Column of Mount Everest.
