Focus on women at Encounters
This year’s Encounters South African International Documentary Festivals features 20 films (co)directed by women, a quota that is in line with the percentage of women MPs in South Africa’s National Assembly. A number of the documentaries also focus on women.
Special sessions at Encounters
Apart from its exciting programme of top documentaries from all over the world, the Encounters 10th South African International Documentary Festival also includes some events for the industry during its run in Johannesburg and Cape Town in late June and early July.
Feature films on YouTube
As from 23 June, video sharing website YouTube will present full length independent films. The aim is to showcase films that have been unable to find distributors.
SA doc wins World TV award
A 48-minute documentary by Johannesburg-based television production company Chedza Media has won the World TV Award for 2008.
Spielberg and Indian buyers
Latest news from Hollywood is that India’s Reliance ADA Group is planning to buy DreamWorks, the company started by Steven Spielberg in 1994 and bought out by Viacom, owner of Paramount, in 2006. The deal is reported to be worth between $500m and $600m.
Filmed entertainment spend to increase
The PricewaterhouseCoopers Global Entertainment and Media Outlook predicts that consumers worldwide will spend $111.2bn on all forms of filmed entertainment in 2012. This is up 30% from 2007’s figure of $8.5bn.
Narnia returns to box office
The second film in The Chronicles of Narnia franchise, Prince Caspian, has predictably opened in top spot at the South African box office in its first week of release (6 to 12 June), making R2.9m.
Israeli Film Festival
Cinema Nouveau patrons in Johannesburg and Pretoria will be exposed to seven fascinating films from Israel during the end of June and the beginning of July at the Israeli Film Festival.

Music Award for Marshall Harmse
Marshall Harmse, Urban Rhythm Factory’s senior sound engineer has won the Best Composition prize of the Master Hsing Yun Awards at the Sounds of the Human World International Musical Composition Quest 2008 held in Malaysia.
