Rotolight Anova PRO 2 wins NAB 2018 Best of Show award

Rotolight, the award-winning British LED lighting manufacturer, has announced the latest award win for the Anova PRO 2 studio and location LED as it was named ‘Best of Show’ in the StudioDaily Prime awards at the NAB Show 2018. The Anova PRO 2 was highlighted by judges as exemplifying innovation, value and reliability in the creative marketplace.

The annual StudioDaily Prime awards recognise the most outstanding production and post-production technology introduced over the last year. The judging team undertook a rigorous, independent test of the product as part of its decision-making process.

The Anova PRO 2 made its North American debut at the NAB Show on Monday. The LED is a pioneering continuous light and High Speed Sync (HSS) flash that redefines the standard for professional studio and location lighting. Not only does the light provide the best power to consumption ratio in the industry, reducing studio operating costs, but also best-in-class power output.

Described by the judges as “love at first sight”, the Anova PRO 2 has gained industry recognition for several of its features, including CineSFX™— a built-in, customisable set of special effects that enable users to simulate lighting conditions such as lightning, emergency lights, television flicker and firelight. CineSFX is an industry first, which has led to a step change in the broadcast, media and entertainment sector alongside Rotolight’s many other revolutionary differentiators, including excellent colour rendition, leading energy efficiency and versatility.

The Anova PRO 2 has already made its mark in the industry and is the light of choice for Celebro, London’s first fully 4K television studio regularly used by global broadcasters such as the BBC, MTV, and the Discovery Channel.

“The Rotolight Anova PRO 2 is the perfect light for working in the live television environment. We are able to light people accurately, very quickly, saving us time, mistakes on air and a lot of money,” says Wesley Dodd, CEO of Celebro Media.

This latest award follows on from the Anova PRO 2 being awarded Gear of the Year by Pro Moviemaker earlier this year.

“We are absolutely delighted with this award win, as it’s not just within an individual category, but an overall best in show accolade. As with all our products, we develop and design our LEDs based on the needs of the industry and with a view to making the lives of cinematographers, DOPs, lighting gaffers and photographers that much easier, pushing the limits and focusing on innovation. This latest award just reinforces our commitment to keep challenging the status quo of the lighting industry,” says Rod Aaron Gammons, MD of Rotolight.

Dancing on Ice shines with Rotolight Anova PRO 2

As the tenth series of Dancing on Ice makes its way back to our screens, Rotolight, the award-winning British LED lighting manufacturer, has announced it has supplied its Anova PRO 2 location and studio lights to help create a dramatic new look for the production. The lights, 30 in total, were provided in five custom-designed rigs for the filming of the TV idents, glamour and profile shots. The unique rigs each featured six lights mounted in a large ringlight configuration.

David Sutton, VT director who has worked on the likes of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, The X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing, needed a different, unique look for the shots to herald the show’s return.

“We wanted something new, fresh and original for the relaunch of Dancing on Ice, something that was visually different and interesting. What we were looking for was obviously the performance and functionality of the lights, but I also wanted to incorporate them into the actual shot to make it unique,” says Sutton.

Chris Yacoubian (The Voice UK and Strictly Come Dancing), director of photography for the glamour and profile shots for the show sought out the Rotolight team. “I saw the Anova PRO 2 clustered together and that just sparked my creativity. The lights are powerful, portable and beautiful in terms of their colour rendition and skin tones. They are a fantastic tool and deliver and perform perfectly. I’m thrilled with the result,” he says.

The Rotolight Anova PRO 2 is a pioneering continuous light and High Speed Sync (HSS) flash for creative image-makers — one of the brightest LEDs ever launched in its class. The light includes a customisable suite of Rotolight’s award winning CineSFX™ (Fire, Lightning, TV, Gunshot, Paparazzi, etc) which eliminates the need for expensive, time consuming legacy ‘flicker-box’ workflows. The LED provides the best power to consumption ratio in the industry, with a mere 72W consumption. The light also delivers outstanding colour reproduction (CRI>96, TLCI 91) eliminating the need for expensive post production — something that was important for Yacoubian and Sutton during the shoot.

“The newly launched Rotolight Anova PRO 2s have performed amazingly well. In a studio literally made of ice, we constantly pushed them to their limits and they haven’t let us down. They are a seriously versatile tool for your kit. Apart from the great functionality, the lights are really energy efficient, which was vital for us as we were running so many at the same time. They are also safe and generate no heat that we had to worry about, while drawing hardly any power — unlike traditional lighting,” Yacoubian says.

The custom-designed hex rings were controlled via a lighting desk and five-pin DMX connection, that also enabled operators to use the built-in CineSFX™ suite of effects, such as flash and pulse lights for added drama.

“The lights are amazing. You can create a number of effects, like firelight or paparazzi, which we used on set, and quickly switch between them and the continuous light with just a flick of a button or go from soft tungsten to punchy daylight in a heartbeat,” says Yacoubian.

The Anova PRO 2s are sold separately, and Rotolight will be offering the unique hex ring mounting system as part of its product portfolio later in the year.

“Everyone is really pleased with the end result. The Anova PRO 2s have been absolutely amazing. They look stunning and have the ability to flash, pulse and change. They gave us that edge over other TV shows, and provided the cherry on the cake for the glamour shots. I really love them,” concludes Sutton.

Rotolight unveils Anova PRO 2

Rotolight, award-winning British LED lighting manufacturer, has announced the launch
of Anova PRO 2; a pioneering continuous light and High Speed Sync (HSS) flash for
creative image-makers. Redefining the standard for professional LED lighting in studio
or location, Anova PRO 2 is one of the brightest LED lights ever launched in its class,
delivering 10 700 lux at three feet. Packed with innovative features for television, film
production, and photography, the Anova PRO 2 is the fourth generation of Rotolight’s
award-winning studio/location light.

The Rotolight Anova PRO 2 embodies the pinnacle of LED technology, designed for the
most demanding of professionals. Offering 70 per cent more power output than its
predecessor, Rotolight Anova PRO 2 provides the best power to consumption ratio in
the industry, as one of the most energy efficient LED panels ever designed. With a
mere 72W consumption, Anova PRO 2 reduces operating costs for TV studios, whilst
providing unrivalled battery performance on location.

Anova PRO 2 delivers outstanding colour reproduction (CRI>96, TLCI 91) eliminating
the need for expensive post-production, whilst featuring electronically adjustable
colour temperature in both flash and continuous modes (6300-3150K).

“The Rotolight Anova PRO 2 is the perfect light for working in the live television
environment. We are able to light people accurately, very quickly, saving us time,
mistakes on air and a lot of money,’ says Wesley Dodd, CEO Celebro Media.

Rotolight is the lighting provider of choice for Celebro, London’s first fully 4K television
studio regularly used by global broadcasters such as the BBC, MTV, and the Discovery
Channel. As an existing Rotolight customer, Celebro Media was keen to be the first in
the world to get its hands on Rotolight’s latest lighting innovation.

“We are very excited to have placed an order for 200 of the Anova PRO 2 lights for our
new studios opening this year in Washington, Moscow and Los Angeles,’ says Dodd.

Due to its powerful output, yet lightweight nature, Anova PRO 2 is also ideal on
location, and has become the light of choice for Italian state broadcaster RAI TV, who
recently acquired 150 Anova PRO Kits for their ENG production teams.

“Rotolight is a totally unique product, as it works equally well in the studio and the
field. As we develop the Live OB side of our business, the Anova PRO 2 was an
obvious addition to our equipment list. Having a lighting fixture with such a
substantial increase in power output means we will be able to cope with the most
demanding of locations or weather conditions, whilst its battery efficiency simplifies
our setup. The addition of an RJ45 DMX connection allows us to install them in our
studio, at a fraction of a cost with the same professional results,’ says Andrew
Lebentz, head of production for Celebro Media.

For television and film production, Anova PRO 2 includes a customizable suite of
Rotolight’s award winning CineSFX™ (Fire, Lightning, TV, Gunshot, Paparazzi etc)
which eliminate the need for expensive, time consuming legacy “flicker-box’
workflows. Designed in conjunction with Stefan Lange, Visual FX veteran (Batman,
James Bond “Skyfall’, Tomb Raider), the patented CineSFX™ suite has been updated
with “enhanced realism’ and the addition of a “Chase’ FX capability, to simulate the
effect of motion on static sets. The newly integrated wireless Elinchrom Skyport
receiver enables wireless control of CineSFX, colour temperature and brightness from
up to 656ft(200m).

For professional photographers, Anova PRO 2 also features an updated High Speed
Sync (HSS) flash capability (1/8000th), with a 250 per cent power boost in flash
mode. With zero recycle time, you’ll never miss a shot, making it the perfect choice
for today’s high frame rate capable cameras. Anova PRO 2 can be simultaneously a
continuous “modelling light’ and HSS flash, allowing the photographer to easily acquire
focus in dimly lit situations and optimise composition. The unique circular shape also
provides a naturally soft, flattering light output, with Rotolight’s signature catchlight
effect.

Celebrity photographer Mark Mann (Margot Robbie, Martin Scorsese, Benedict
Cumberbatch) said: “I’ve shot strobe my entire career, and had always been intrigued
by continuous light, but never found any that I liked until the Rotolight Anova. The
quality of light is absolutely beautiful, it gives you a very filmic feel. Versatile,
consistent and reliable, it also looks good on set and I know it will always deliver in
high turnaround environments. As a photographer who’s being asked more and more
to shoot video and stills at the same time, Rotolight has really improved my work
flow’.

Anova PRO 2 is available from £1249.99ex/ $1625/1399euro and ships as standard
with integrated DMX, V-lock battery plate, wireless Elinchrom receiver and 4-piece
filter kit as standard. A wide range of additional accessories and modifiers are
separately available.
