Registration now open for NEWF 2018

Registration is open for the second edition of the Nature, Environment & Wildlife Filmmakers Congress (NEWF) which will take place at the Durban Botanic Gardens from 16 to 18 July 2018.

“The Nature, Environment & Wildlife Filmmakers Congress is designed for passionate filmmakers around the world to forge new relationships, build on those already formed, innovate and move towards further development in natural history and conservation content creation, using Africa as the key landmark,” explains Noel Kok, founder and programme director of NEWF.

“Together we inspire African filmmakers to bring life to their stories, the celebrations, binding connections and plight of our nature, environment and wildlife and ultimately distribute these stories to film festivals and broadcasters world over,” he said.

For three days, NEWF creates a path to conservation through film by providing a platform for delegates to engage, network and contribute to the industry. NEWF 2018 offers topics to inspire story and spark lively and robust debate, informative panel sessions, case studies and interactive demonstrations. An array of keynote speakers, industry leaders and special guests have been invited, whose details will be announced in due course.

NEWF is positioning itself as Africa’s premiere destination for the convergence of nature, environment, wildlife and adventure conservation filmmakers, scientists, conservationists and broadcast media.

“Currently, the South African Film and Television industry has a number of festivals, markets and awards which develop and support content-creators, but none holistically cover the specialist and yet diverse value chain of the nature, environment and wildlife content or specifically respond to the growth and transformation challenges within this segment of the industry. In order to respond to these challenges the Nature, Environment & Wildlife Filmmakers Congress and its associated programmes was born,” explained Kok.

One of its key areas of focus is the NEWF Development Fund – a programme designed to fund the production of documentary shorts to kick-start the next generation of nature, environment, wildlife and adventure filmmakers and will host the N.E.W Pitch Competition during the congress. The N.E.W Pitch short documentary pitching competition is aimed at discovering the next generation or nature, environment, wildlife filmmakers.

“Do you have an engaging, innovative or inspirational natural history, environmental, conservation or adventure story?” asks Pragna Parsotam-Kok, founder and Congress director of NEWF.  “If you do, we invite you to submit your documentary short concept and you could be one of eight finalists selected to pitch at the N.E.W Pitch competition during NEWF 2018. Submissions are open to all emerging and aspiring filmmakers, scientists and conservationists over the age of 18. Coming out of the pitching session, four winners will be selected to win R50 000 to develop and produce their documentary short.”

Deadline: 10 June.

Sisters of the Wilderness set to premiere at Encounters

Sisters of the Wilderness, a new South African social impact feature documentary, directed by award-winning filmmaker, Karin Slater, will have its world premiere at the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival in Cape Town and Johannesburg in June; with further festival screenings at the Durban International Film Festival and at the Nature, Environment, Wildlife Filmmakers (NEWF) Congress in Durban in July, and at the Mzansi Women’s Film Festival in Johannesburg in August.

Set in the iMfolozi wilderness, South Africa, in the oldest game park in Africa, the iconic Hluhluwe-iMfolozi park, where the White Rhino was saved from extinction, Sisters of the Wilderness tells the story of five young Zulu women venturing into the wilderness for the first time on a journey of self-discovery, reminding them that we are all intimately linked to nature.

The film follows the women as they walk in big game country and camp under the stars, totally surrounded by wild animals. Exposed to the elements and carrying on their backs all they need for the journey, they face emotional and physical challenges, and learn what it takes to survive in the wild.

“We want to ‘transfer’ the audience to an ancient place where no barriers separate human and nature,” says creator/producer, Ronit Shapiro, of One Nature Films, whose experience in the iMfolozi wilderness and a meeting with South Africa’s legendary conservationist, the late Dr Ian Player, inspired her to make this film. “A journey into wilderness is an intense experience where one can expect to undergo a personal transformation and build leadership.”

Director Karin Slater says, “I was born in Empangeni and spent my early years, close to the iMfolozi wilderness. I have a deep love and connection to this area. I know what the wilderness has done for me over the years.”

Sisters of the Wilderness serves as a foundation for an outreach programme that will use multiple platforms to re-connect global audiences with nature.

The film also explores the plight of this wilderness area threatened by an open-cast coal mine on its border, as well as the severe poaching that is decimating the rhino population here.

Shapiro has engaged London-based, Evolutionary Films, as the film’s international sales agency.

Screenings at Encounters in Cape Town are on 2, 6 and 7 June and in Johannesburg on 10 June.
