Facilis to debut version 8 of their shared storage system and version 3.5 of FastTracker MAM

At NAB 2020, Facilis – a leading international supplier of cost-effective, high performance shared storage solutions for collaborative media production networks – will debut version 8 of the Facilis Shared Storage System, version 3.5 of its FastTracker Media Asset Management software, and new Object Cloud Synchronization features.

One of the most compelling releases to date, version 8 includes unique software-defined Bandwidth Priority, SSD Tiering and Multi-disk Parity:

  • Bandwidth Priority delivers full throughput to all workstations during normal operation but prioritizes workstations to maintain greater throughput when the server enters a high-load condition. This priority setting is dynamic and can affect client performance within seconds of applying.
  • SSD and HDD tiering was developed to deliver dedicated speed for projects needing SSD-level performance, while maintaining a perpetual HDD-based mirror.
  • Software-defined Multi-disk Parity can be enabled for up to 4 drive failures per drive group, on a virtual volume-basis. This technology allows owners of aging systems to better protect their assets from data loss due to drive failure.

Facilis FastTracker media asset management software continues to advance with file movement profiles, duplicate file reporting, and a secure browse interface. FastTracker can now flush and pre-fetch files and folders from cloud and LTO locations through the Object Cloud feature, while reporting the status of archived media. Facilis Object Cloud will introduce a new Multi-site Sync feature that can bring together groups of editors on the same file system across multiple locations. Using the cloud storage included with the feature, projects can be shared and linked on remote workstations, as easily as linking to a local drive.

“We’re extremely excited to show our latest developments this year at NAB,” said Jim McKenna, Chief Marketing Officer at Facilis Technology. “Our shared file system and storage architecture continues to be the best in the business, allowing content creators all over the world to be more efficient and collaborative. This year, we’re reaching outside the facility as well, to enable secure access for remote workgroups, producers and stakeholders to in-facility assets through cloud workflows that are as simple as they are powerful.”

Facilis is represented by Protea Technology Group in South Africa.

Facilis wins 2019 NAB Show Product of the Year award

Facilis, a leading international supplier of cost-effective, high performance shared storage solutions for collaborative media production networks, recently announced that its Facilis HUB Shared Storage line was a winner in the 2019 NAB Show Product of the Year Awards. The award recognises the most significant and promising new products and technologies showcased by exhibitors at the 2019 NAB Show in Las Vegas, NV.

Facilis HUB Shared Storage is an all-new line of products developed in response to customer requests for a more compact server chassis, lower-cost hybrid (SSD and HDD) options, and integrated cloud and LTO archive features. It features new, more powerful hardware with new drive capacity options and a brand-new look to both the system and the software interface.

“Many thanks to the NAB for presenting us with this prestigious award,” said Jim McKenna, VP Sales and Marketing at Facilis. “The new Facilis HUB Shared Storage product line was introduced with a compelling set of features for streamlining workflow and automating data backup and archive. It’s our most complete product ever.”

Facilis Object Cloud

A big problem for broadcasters and post facilities is managing multiple interfaces for the various locations of their data. With Facilis Object Cloud, files in multiple locations reside in the same directory structure and are tracked by the Facilis FastTracker asset tracking application in the same database as any active media asset. Object Cloud utilises Object Storage technology to virtualise a Facilis volume with cloud and LTO locations. This allows access to files that exist either entirely on disk, entirely in the Cloud or on LTO, or even partially on disk and partially in the cloud.

Facilis is the only shared storage network that allows both block-mode Fibre Channel and Ethernet connectivity simultaneously, and the ability to connect through either method with the same permissions, user accounts, and desktop appearance. This vastly simplifies user access, connection resiliency and network permissions.

Every Facilis HUB Shared Storage server comes with unlimited seats of the Facilis FastTracker asset tracking application. Object Cloud Software and Storage package is available for most Facilis servers running version 7.2 or higher.

Facilis Technology announces new product line

At NAB 2019, Facilis, a leading international supplier of cost-effective, high performance shared storage solutions for collaborative media production networks, announced its new HUB Shared Storage line developed specifically for demanding media production workflows. Built as an entirely new platform, Facilis HUB represents the evolution of the Facilis Shared File System with the block-level virtualisation and multi-connectivity performance required in  shared creative environments.

“HUB Shared Storage is an all-new product, based on our popular HUB Server that launched in 2017. It’s the answer to our customers’ requests for a more compact server chassis, lower-cost hybrid (SSD and HDD) options, and integrated cloud and LTO archive features,” said Jim McKenna, VP Sales and Marketing at Facilis. “We deliver all of this with new, more powerful hardware; new drive capacity options and a new look to both the system and software interface.”

Facilis is the only shared storage network that allows both block-mode Fibre Channel and Ethernet connectivity simultaneously, and the ability to connect through either method with the same permissions, user accounts, and desktop appearance. This vastly simplifies user access, connection resiliency and network permissions. “The system can be configured to be as open as a direct-attached drive or dynamically segmented into various-sized volumes that carry individual permissions for read and write access,” says McKenna. “Content creation workflow management has never been so simple.”

Facilis Object Cloud

Object Cloud is an integrated disk-caching system for cloud and LTO backup and archive that includes up to 100TB of cloud storage for one low yearly cost. A native Facilis Virtual Volume can display Cloud, Tape and spinning disk data in the same directory structure, on the client desktop.

“A big problem for our customers is managing multiple interfaces for the various locations of their data. With Object Cloud, files in multiple locations reside in the same directory structure and are tracked by our FastTracker asset tracking in the same database as any active media asset,” says McKenna. “Object Cloud utilises Object Storage technology to virtualize a Facilis volume with cloud and LTO locations. In doing this, we allow access to files that exist either entirely on disk, entirely in the Cloud or on LTO, or even partially on disk and partially in the cloud. This really is object storage on your desktop!”

Every Facilis HUB Shared Storage server comes with unlimited seats of the Facilis FastTracker asset tracking application. Object Cloud Software and Storage package is available for most Facilis servers running version 7.2 or higher.

At NAB NY 2018, Facilis (Stand N.627), a leading international supplier of cost-effective, high performance shared storage solutions for collaborative media production networks will showcase Version 7.1 features and FastTracker 2.5. Built for the rigors of 4K+ video post-production, HDR, and VR 360 productions, the latest release of the Facilis Shared File System continues to distance itself from garden-variety NAS (Network Attached Storage) storage solutions available from so many vendors today.

Unlike traditional NAS systems, Facilis is a shared file system and avoids the workflow issues inherent in NAS when used in a cross-platform creative environment. With simple project-based volume management and user access control, administrators can manage Fibre Channel and Ethernet clients with the same multi-user write access. Facilis shared storage systems have additional improvements on NAS, including local-attached volume appearance, cross-connectivity failover, and one-touch remote volume mounting.

“New York City sets the bar high for storage and infrastructure as facilities continually compete and challenge themselves with the highest standards while also being increasingly budget conscious,” says James McKenna, VP of Sales and Marketing at Facilis. “We spend a lot of time educating facility managers on what they should expect from a shared storage network and where bottlenecks can occur with standard NAS-based systems. We understand that budgets are tighter than ever, so we’re delivering functionality that customers didn’t think was possible at an incredibly competitive price.”

Version 7.1 adds many additional features that help with the administration of large and small environments alike. Features include real-time and historical bandwidth monitoring of volumes and workstations; RAID50 and RAID51 management through Admin Console; Preferred connection address for multi-path networks; Automatic load balancing of clients across server IPs; Remote client deployment for ease of upgrades in multi-client facilities.

Version 2.5 of the Facilis FastTracker will also be shown at NAB NY. FastTracker is designed for cataloging, searching, and accessing media on all attached storage. Using the new Adobe Panel for Premiere Pro and After Effects, all indexed data is available directly within the Adobe interface. Users can preview local storage assets as well as LTFS and network-based assets for easy locating of media beyond what an OS or app level search can provide.

“The new FastTracker Adobe Panel interface has been well received from our many Adobe-based customers,” adds McKenna. “By adopting a painless policy of indexing and cataloguing data with FastTracker, organisations have increased efficiency, and provided the creative staff with full access to the facility library.”

The new Facilis Hub Server, which has been deployed at several large and notable customer sites, will also be on display. The Facilis Hub Server optimizes drive groups and increases the bandwidth available from standard TerraBlock storage systems.
