Rotolight illuminates BAFTA-nominated film

Rotolight, the award-winning British LED lighting manufacturer, has announced its lighting has been used in the BAFTA-nominated Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool. The movie, starring Annette Bening (American Beauty; The Women; The Search) and Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot; Fantastic Four; 6 Days), follows the romance between a Hollywood leading lady and a young actor.

Set in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the film was directed by Paul McGuigan (Wicker Park; Lucky Number Slevin; Victor Frankenstein), with Urszula Pontikos (Humans; Glue; Second Coming) as director of photography (DOP) and Stefan Lange (Casino Royale; Mission Impossible; Batman) as VFX cinematographer, consulting on all things VFX.

As standard, Lange carries with him a small inventory of equipment, including a set of three Rotolight NEO 2 on-camera LEDs, which were used during filming.

“These lights are something that I would never be without. They are versatile, powerful and with the convenience of being battery powered, they are portable and easy to use,” says Lange. “I’ve also always been a fan of the Anova PRO with its built-in suite of special effects, CineSFX™.”

The Anova PRO was used in the cinema scene within the film — where Gloria (Bening) and Peter (Bell) watch the 1979 sci-fi thriller Alien. The director wanted to project the film’s flicker onto the faces of the audience and the Anova PRO allowed them to do so.

“There was quite an elaborate set-up in a cinema location, which captured the ambience of a movie theatre beautifully, but rather too beautifully. That all important story-telling flicker effect wasn’t very strong. The director and DOP wanted more close-up shots in the scene, which led to a discussion about needing more flicker.

“Using the CineSFX feature on the Anova PRO, we just flicked a switch and had the effect we needed. There were no additional cables needed, no time wasted, just an instant solution with an easily adjustable dial to help us get the correct, subtle effect. The light is fast to modify, quick to move and powerful enough to light a substantial area, even with full white diffusion. For me, one of the main benefits of using the Rotolight LEDs has always been their portability and convenience, and this was clearly demonstrated on-set with this scene,” explains Lange.

Director Paul McGuigan was keen to use traditional visual effect methods that were contemporary with the period of the film and the lead character’s earlier career. In later scenes, like the live action exterior shots and car driving scenes, the product team used a rear projection technique instead of blue/green screen process work.

“The Rotolight NEOs were an interesting addition to supplement the lighting package. The ability to select SFX modes helped give the lighting a more ‘dynamic’ feel. So for instance, in driving scenes where DOP Urszula Pontikos had moving lamps, we used NEOs as some of the static lights using the flicker effect in the SFX suite to help create that scene-changing effect.  We also found the Designer Fade™ feature particularly useful to fade up from zero output to 100% and back again to zero. It allowed a handheld lamp to be moved and create a shifting shadow — but with a source that came from nowhere, and simply went away again. It created a seamless effect and makes the light very nice to work with.”

Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool also stars Julie Walters (Calendar Girls; Mamma Mia!; Paddington) and Vanessa Redgrave (Call the Midwife; Letters to Juliet; Atonement) and is based on the memoir of the same name by Peter Turner.

Based in Nairobi, the company will provide demonstration, sales, systems integration and post-sale support to new and existing PlayBox Technology customers across Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda

ENCO to unveil powerful TV automation and production advances at NAB 2018

ENCO is heading to the 2018 NAB Show with a wide array of new features in its award-winning MOM (Media Operations Manager) system that deepens its integration with third-party solutions while addressing the accelerating transition to IP in today’s television operations. The broadcast automation and production workflow innovator will demonstrate the new enhancements in booth N3824 at the event, which will be held from 9 to 12 April 2018 in Las Vegas.

MOM offers broadcasters, cable television operators and streaming media providers a comprehensive, reliable and cost-effective platform for organising, managing and automating critical broadcast production and integrated channel playout tasks. Combining functionality including ingest, media asset management, graphics, live production and playout automation within a unified, easy-to-use platform, MOM also integrates seamlessly with a growing range of third-party systems to form frictionless, end-to-end media workflows.

“In the two years since we first launched MOM, we’ve continued to add new capabilities that deliver increased flexibility and value for our customers while expanding its scope into more production processes,” said Ken Frommert, president of ENCO. “The new features we’re showcasing at this year’s NAB Show enable even tighter interoperability with popular third-party tools our clients are using today while laying the groundwork for powerful, next-generation workflows in the future.”

Foremost among those future-friendly enhancements is support for NDI version 3, the third generation of NewTek’s royalty-free Network Device Interface IP video technology. Enabling easy, bidirectional transport of high-quality SD, HD and 4K/UHD video over standard Ethernet networks, the integration of NDI 3 enables MOM to seamlessly interface with the vast ecosystem of NDI-enabled sources and output devices in all-IP or hybrid IP/SDI infrastructures.

Streamlining newsroom workflows, a new Media Object Server (MOS) interface and advanced newsroom computer system (NRCS) plug-ins seamlessly bridge television news production and playout operations. Plug-ins for AP ENPS, Avid iNEWS and Octopus Newsroom allow journalists and news producers to access MOM asset libraries directly within their familiar NRCS user interface, incorporating MOM elements including graphics, audio and video into their scripts. Rundowns are automatically synchronised with the MOM system, which can then be controlled by the NRCS via the MOS protocol to play out the assets.

MOM’s live production capabilities also continue to evolve. Live SDI and NDI inputs enable seamless automated cut-ins without the need for an external switcher, while manual operators can instantly switch between multiple live or pre-recorded sources though MOM’s intuitive OnAir user interface.

Graphics, bugs and tickers created with MOM’s integrated graphics generator can be applied to both live and pre-recorded video, while visual effects such as picture-in-picture can be created using MOM’s built-in tools. Other new features in the latest MOM release include support for SCTE-35 triggers and the ability to pass through CEA-608/708 Closed Captions.

“Today’s media organisations need flexible solutions that provide a future-proof foundation while integrating seamlessly into their existing operational environments,” said Frommert. “We are excited to keep expanding MOM’s extensive, forward-looking feature set beyond traditional broadcast automation tasks while maintaining its hallmark price/performance value.”

Duwarkah adds, “Urban Brew Studios is in a very interesting place in its life-cycle. Due to the sheer enormity of all the changes taking place, I am both excited and nervous. But as the saying goes, if the dream does not scare you, it is not big enough.”

Film industry development boost for Nelson Mandela Bay

0

Port Elizabeth-based screen content hub, The Media Workshop, has employed ten film graduates as interns this year, as part of a broader film industry development initiative.

The Media Workshop is owned by Denise Roodt, who was also instrumental in bringing AFDA Film School to Port Elizabeth in 2015. “I feel I have come full circle. Having seen the genesis group of AFDA students through their three-year degree programme, I have returned to running The Media Workshop on a full-time basis, where I shall focus on creating employment and self-employment opportunities for emerging filmmakers.”

Over the course of the year, the interns will work on productions commissioned by the SABC and develop original content for distribution on a variety of platforms.

Brad Oppelt (intern team leader, Technical) says, “The Media Workshop has given us the opportunity to still grow our skills as film and media producers, but also show the media world what we can do.”

“I cannot wait to dive in and to create good local content for South Africa and to develop the industry within the Eastern Cape,” says Jessica Hogg (intern, Art Department).

The Media Workshop has also secured funding for 20 disadvantaged learners to complete its one-year National Certificate in Film and Television Production. Both projects are supported by the MICT Seta.

Roodt’s long-term colleague, Hubert Ngqawana, who managed The Media Workshop while she was employed as Dean of AFDA, has now taken up the position of head of Academic Programmes.

“Our training programmes have over the years produced successful screen content practitioners like Nolitha Xozwa and Siyanda Manzini, who were recently featured on Weekend Post for their TV series, Ubudoda on DSTV’s channel 161; former SABC 1’s Uzalo and MNet’s Isibaya story liner Zolisa Sigwanda; Gqabi Njokweni, Sicelo Mkhize and Bulelani Scott of SABC News; Lizo Tolom of Urban Brew Studios; comedian Siya Seya, Busisiwe Nako of Voo C Media Group and many more. We remain committed to training more filmmakers as we develop the Eastern Cape into a formidable film hub.”

Roodt attributes The Media Workshop’s success to the fact that the company’s services cover the entire creative industry development value chain. “We deliver accredited training programmes, produce quality content and incubate innovative productions and production companies. We’re a one-stop shop!”

The Media Workshop’s vision is to develop screen content producers who create sustainable businesses telling local stories with universal appeal. “Opportunities in the content creation space are being created as we speak. The Media Workshop is in the business of developing creators of content. It’s a very exciting time for our industry.”

Sipho Bosa (intern team leader, Creative) says, “The best thing about the Media Workshop is the freedom. The freedom to create in an exciting environment inhabited by other industry creatives. It’s a whole lot of fun.”

The Media Workshop still has limited spaces available for their National Certificate in Film and Television Production programme, which starts in mid-February. The programme covers studio and outside broadcasts and film and television production, as well as single and multi-camera productions. Over the course of the year, students produce talk shows, short films, music videos and public service announcements.

Award-winning Democrats documentary now unbanned in Zimbabwe

0

Zimbabweans will finally be able to see the award-winning documentary Democrats which chronicles the 2013 Constitution-making process in the country. This follows a recent Harare High Court ruling which effectively lifts the prohibition of the film.

In 2016, the film was banned by the country’s censorship board which described the film as “unfit for local consumption.”

Since its premiere in 2015, the film has been screened all over the world and in numerous African countries but has yet to be shown in Zimbabwe.

Camilla Nielsson, the film’s director, said, “I’m very happy with the High Court order today that lifts the ban on my film Democrats. The Censorship Board’s will now issue a certificate, and we can finally distribute the film in the country where it was made.”

The film’s unbanning is on condition that a warning is displayed at the start of the film that there are scenes of violence therein and certain expletives be taken out of the subtitles.

Democrats follows two top political operatives, Douglas Mwonzora from MDC-T and Paul Mangwana from Zanu PF, in Zimbabwe who have been appointed to lead the creation of a new constitution after years of increasingly corrupt leadership from President Robert Mugabe. The two men are political opponents with wholly different styles but united in their ambition to deliver a new foundation for a reformed Zimbabwe. The film provides unprecedented, exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to one of modern Africa’s most gripping – and previously hidden – dramas of political survival at the highest level.

African Screen Network, the African distributors of the film, have shown the film in 6 African territories where it was received with much acclaim. This includes special screenings of the film in 2016 attended by the film’s co-protagonist, Douglas Mwonzora, in South Africa.

Khanyo Mjamba, African Screen Network manager said, “We’re thrilled to finally be able to legally show this film to the people of Zimbabwe. It’s a hugely important document of the country’s history, it’s extremely relevant to present-day Zimbabwe, and holds its own as a quality piece of documentary filmmaking.”

Dejero transmission packages support Winter Games broadcasters

Dejero simplifies set-up and connectivity services with ‘collect and go’ EnGo packages and boosts technical support for broadcasters

Dejero, an innovator in cloud-managed solutions that provide video transport and internet connectivity while mobile or in remote locations, is supporting broadcast rights holders and other local and international broadcast and media organisations in their live coverage of the Winter Games in Pyeongchang.

Dejero’s ‘ready to go’ transmission equipment rental packages consist of pre-tested EnGo mobile transmitters, batteries, chargers, backpacks and a provision of region-specific SIM cards which provide cellular connectivity from different carriers in South Korea for optimal performance in the local cellular network environment.

“Mountainous terrain, remote venues and weather conditions make covering the Winter Games a challenge,” explains Bogdan Frusina, founder at Dejero.

“Rights-holding broadcasters supplement the main event feeds with athlete interviews and on-location expert commentary, and getting those feeds can be a challenge at the outdoor venues. By pre-loading our EnGo transmitters with multiple SIM cards serviced by different carriers, and by pre-configuring modem modules specifically for operation in South Korea; we’re not only alleviating hassle for the production crews, we’re ensuring that remote broadcasters stay seamlessly connected in the challenging conditions of the Pyeongchang landscape. If one network path deteriorates, EnGo automatically adjusts to deliver exceptional picture quality with low latency.”

Dejero’s offering features the EnGo; a compact and modular mobile transmitter that encodes high-quality video and transmits over multiple IP networks. It is ideal for newsgathering, sports coverage, and live event broadcasting from remote locations, and while in motion. It can be camera-mounted, vehicle-mounted, and carried in a backpack.

Broadcasters of the Winter Games are also supported by Dejero’s on-site technical team, as well as its 24/7 telephone support service. The additional support is provided throughout the sixteen-day event including at the coastal cluster in the Gangneung Olympic Park and the mountain cluster in Alpensia Resort, Daegwallyeong-myeon.

Prior to the games Dejero set up a bespoke logistics service to make the provision of equipment as easy as possible; customers had the choice of collecting Dejero equipment in their country of origin or onsite in Pyeongchang, with the ‘drop off’ process being just as simple. Dejero also keeps equipment on hand if backup units are required.

Dejero’s efforts to serve its customers at this global sporting event once again demonstrates its commitment to customer support and its vision to provide reliable connectivity anywhere.

“Simplicity of operation is a key objective for Dejero and we try to go the extra mile in order to guarantee broadcasters can deliver the highest quality shots possible,” concluded Frusina.

Dejero has a long history of supporting customers at international sporting events including Rio 2016, Sochi 2014, and London 2012, and began with a television first: live coverage of the torch relay across Canada for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games. It will be providing similar professional services at the World Cup in Russia later this year.
