Dejero presents new video transport and connectivity solutions for mobile broadcasting at CABSAT

Dejero, an innovator in cloud-managed solutions that provide video transport and Internet connectivity while mobile or in remote locations, has announced that it will showcase solutions for IP network blending and video compression technology in support of remote and mobile broadcasting at the Ideal Systems’ stand ZB5-C50 during CABSAT 2018, which runs at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 14 to 16 January 2018.

“We’ll be highlighting some of the key developments we’ve made to our solutions over the last year that address everyday connectivity and bandwidth challenges faced by mobile reporting crews in the region when they’re getting content back to base from remote or tricky locations,” said Mark Moore, VP international sales at Dejero.

New to CABSAT this year is the Dejero GateWay in-vehicle mobile connectivity solution, which offers on-location teams fast, reliable, and secure connectivity to the public Internet or private networks using high-bandwidth blended network technology. It enables remote field crews to send and receive large files and access their newsroom or media asset management systems, as well as cloud services used for collaboration.

Enhancing the RF performance of Dejero’s EnGo mobile transmitter is the EnGo Vehicle Mount Kit; also on show at CABSAT. The kit provides a mounting option for newsgathering or production vehicles that connects to roof-mounted high-gain antennas. It means that the EnGo can now be used as an encoder/transmitter in a cellular, satellite or hybrid transmission path vehicle, and then can quickly be disconnected and placed into a backpack or mounted directly onto a camera to give crews maximum mobility when on the scene of breaking news and live events.

Dejero is also showcasing its implementation of HEVC to offer improved picture quality in low bitrate and limited bandwidth environments in two new solutions: PathWay and WayPoint. The Dejero PathWay rack-mounted encoder/transmitter is designed for installation in vehicles or fixed locations and supports both HEVC, when paired with the new WayPoint receiver; and AVC (H.264) encoding, providing automatic detection and immediate backwards compatibility with existing or legacy AVC-based Dejero receivers.

The encoder/transmitter, which contains internal Wi-Fi, is also compatible with the recently launched Dejero CellSat blended cellular and satellite solution. It’s available in two different configurations: an Ethernet configuration that includes two Ethernet ports for satellite (Ku- and Ka-band, BGAN) or wired IP network (LAN/WAN) connectivity; and an Ethernet and cellular configuration offering up to six cellular connections.

Dejero WayPoint is a four output 1U receiver, that supports HEVC decoding to SDI or IP (MPEG-TS over IP) playout workflows. It also supports AVC decoding of feeds from legacy transmitters, has dual redundant power supplies, and comes with data redundancy RAID storage capabilities.

Finally, visitors can see how the Dejero Mobile App for iOS can help mobile journalists and video professionals using smartphones and tablets to broadcast live from any location, record video for future transmission and import or upload edited video files to designated servers when traditional broadcast equipment is not at the scene.

LiveU highlights massive growth in Live IP video traffic

LiveU recently offered new insights into the massive growth in live IP video traffic in the broadcast market, reflecting the transition away from traditional satellite transmission towards cellular. Based on data from LiveU’s global customer base (over 2,000 customers in over 100 countries), the findings reveal the full extent of the surge in demand for live content, geographical differences in video acquisition behaviour, the move to HD and more.

According to LiveU’s internal report, data traffic for live video over IP has doubled over the last two years, with around 1.5 million live broadcasting hours delivered by LiveU in 2017. The average live stream per customer is 2.7 hours per day.

With the advances in HD video quality, HD 720/1080 video traffic now accounts for almost 80 per cent of all traffic delivered this year and there has been an increase of over 120 per cent in live HD sessions compared to 2016.

The length of video sessions has also increased with geographical differentiations worldwide. While the average broadcaster/content creator live session is 38 minutes, Western Europe and Africa show the longest average sessions at 46 minutes. In general, Africa has seen a move away from satellite to cellular bonding, with cellular often replacing satellite in some countries such as Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. This can be explained by the strength of the region’s 4G networks and the lower costs offered by cellular. Some broadcasters are also creating multi-camera productions using cellular transmission units.

LiveU’s data shows the reliability of bonded cellular with 79 per cent of all bonded video now delivered over cellular networks only (wired internet connection, WiFi and satellite accounting for the remaining share).

The worldwide average uplink speed for video acquisition has reached 4.5Mbps, with developed areas experiencing approximately 9Mbps on average.

Samuel Wasserman, LiveU’s CEO and co-founder, said, “What stands out in these findings is the transition away from traditional transmission methods to cellular bonding. This trend is gaining even greater traction with our LU600 4K HEVC solution offering broadcasters and other content creators unmatched quality and reliability.”

“We believe growth in 2018 will come from this transition, broadcast cloud services and HEVC. Bringing higher quality with even greater reliability to the market, HEVC enhances our technology’s use across multiple genres. We’re already seeing its use increase beyond news, with our global customers looking to deploy the LU600 HEVC solution for live sports and other vertical segments,” Wasserman concluded

Gangster film, The Number to close at KAFF

The Number, directed by Khalo Matabane, will have its South African premiere as the Closing Night Film of the 14th KZN African Film Festival (KAFF) which runs from 5 to 10 December 2017 at the Ekhaya Multi Arts Centre in Kwa Mashu, Durban. The film will be screened on  10  December 2017 at 18h00. The KAFF selection is of special significance for The Number as the film was shot on location in KwaZulu-Natal.

Produced by Born Free Media and Videovision Entertainment, The Number stars Mothusi Magano in the lead as Magadien, Warren Masemola, Sihle Xaba, Presley Chwenegyagae, Lemogang Tsipa, Kevin Smith, and Deon Lotz.  The internationally acclaimed Terry Pheto and Hakeem Kae-Kazim make guest appearances.  Bringing a strong authenticity to the world of the story, 35 ex-offenders from Kwa Mashu and Wentworth performed in the film and along with the cast, gave incredible performances.

The film is inspired by Jonny Steinberg’s award-winning non-fiction book – ‘The Number’ with its big screen adaptation by Paul Ian Johnson revealing the origins of the fearsome numbers gangs that operate in prisons throughout South Africa.  The Number is the extraordinary tale of the nigh-impossible redemption of high-ranking Magadien, a Magistrate of the 28’s, one of the notorious Numbers prison gangs.  It charts his journey as a man who finds his humanity –  from being a hardened prisoner, loyal to his gang, to him turning his back on them and the criminal way of life; to choosing his family and building a relationship with his son.

Commenting on the KAFF selection, Khalo Matabane said, “We are thrilled to have the South African premiere of The Number as the Closing Night movie at KAFF. For us it is something of a homecoming as we shot the film in Durban, and we are proud that the first screening in the country is taking place at KAFF in KwaMashu.”

The Number will be released in South Africa in early 2018.

Hangman contestants rake in more than R30 million

For anyone who has ever watched Cell C’s reality show, Hangman on e.tv or South Africa’s newest rich-media platform, Black – you’ll quickly find yourself sitting on the edge of your seat as a team of backers drill down to find flaws in the contestants’ tasks. They don’t pull any punches. If anything viewers will be left punch drunk.

“Hangman has far exceeded our expectations. One of our core values is innovation and the show is a natural fit for Cell C.  We are extremely proud of the calibre of innovators this show has produced and know that the success of Hangman will be felt long after the final episode has aired,” says Surie Ramasary, chief executive: Content for Cell C.

But then again innovation, as they say, is not for the weak.  It’s a cutthroat environment that requires a complex set of skills. But it’s also the only way we as a country can leapfrog out of our economic crisis.

“Most innovators are great at coming up with new ideas, but when it comes to business and entrepreneurial skills they often fall far short,” says executive producer Odette Schwegler. “This show seeks to mentor our country’s top inventors into world-class business people.”

And if you look at the results it’s definitely working.  To date, the contestants on the show have raked in in excess of R30 million in business deals, loans and distribution agreements.

“These are people who would have battled to claw their way to even get a meeting with some of the big distribution companies.  Hangman has certainly helped to open doors,” says Schwegler.

Dr Bonex Mwakikunga, who has developed a breathalyser for detecting sugar diabetes levels has scored big.  He has been offered an R21 million funding from the Technology Innovation Agency to develop his patented prototype.

In addition, the value of his product has been picked up by Alco Safe who distributes alcohol breathalysers – they have pledged 1 million in development funding for the device.

“We would assist to save time in providing the expertise, to get from a larger device to a smaller device,” confirmed Rhys Evans of Alco Safe. “We can reduce the development time of the device and the cost of the development.”

Christo Rossouw from Klerksdorp has scored big with distributor Fever Tree who will be testing his products in the market in three big supermarket chains.  The potential is endless.

“If it works on the shelves we’ve committed to adding it to our product line as a giveaway for the next season and then we will take it from there,” says CEO of Fever Tree Gordon Muller.

It’s the leg up that this small town innovator could only have dreamt of before.

Bedfordview based Dr Sean Armstrong has also managed to make giant strides with his Uniclick syringe.  Imvula medical supplies and healthcare logistics placed an order for his syringes – the order is in the pipeline already.  Sean believes that the deal will be worth in the region of R600 000.

“I have been in the healthcare industry for a long time and rarely does one see basic equipment meet great innovation in this way,” says Mark Banfield, an IMvula consultant.

In addition, Sean believes he has secured in the region of R1.1m in deals and tender potential during the course of the show.  But it was cold comfort this week when he was shown the trapdoor by the backers.

Speak to the contestants and most of them have benefitted and grown in some shape or form from their association with the show.  Dean Fegen has signed up a distribution deal in Botswana for Polyhammer and Darren Aitken says the Curban Urge invention has been snapped up by Alpha Pharm with the promise of distribution in 900 of their pharmacies.

But it’s not only contestants who have benefitted.  The show has also opened doors for a number of students, giving them a much-needed foot in the door.

“We have boarded 25 students giving them the opportunity to experience reality television on a team of 60.  It’s a difficult industry to break into and at least if they have the experience, they stand a better chance of securing jobs,” says Schwegler.

Eight of the students have been involved in behind the scenes social media campaigns, transcribing and as assistant content directors.

“I will cherish the humility, warmth and innovation of my colleagues during my time on the production and I will continue to pursue filmmaking,” says student Paxton Setau.

Student Peace Aganbi beams, “I am beyond thrilled to be a part of the team to shine a spotlight on the innovators in South Africa.”

Seventeen film school graduates from Boston Media House and AFDA have volunteered to work with the production team in producing adverts for the three Hangman finalists. AFDA and Boston Media House generously put out a request to their final year students asking them if they wanted to participate in the show.

Three teams were selected comprising two teams from AFDA and another team from Boston Media House. The teams will work with the contestants to produce a broadcast quality advert from conceptualisation to final edit within four days.  It will be an arduous task, but the former film school students are eager and enthusiastic to take part in the reality show and see this as the first step in their journey of fulfilling their ambitions as filmmakers.

“Hangman isn’t just a reality show – it’s been a life-changing experience for a broad spectrum of South Africans.  It’s taught valuable life lessons and it’s put local innovators under the spotlight and given them the chance to thrive,” says Ramasary.

Hangman airs on e.tv on Sundays at 11h50 with a repeat broadcast on Saturdays at 13h00. It also broadcasts on eExtra on Wednesdays at 19h30 with a repeat on Thursdays at 10h00.

The full Hangman series is also available for free, on newly launched entertainment and content platform, black. South Africans, on any network, can download the GETblack Android & iOS apps using a tablet or phone. It will also available on a web interface at www.black.co.za.

Oliver Tambo: Have You Heard from Johannesburg | Connie Field | South Africa | 2017 | 90 min
Political comrades and law partners, Mandela and Tambo shared a political destiny. Nelson Mandela is a household name. Oliver Tambo is virtually unknown. Banned in South Africa, Tambo led the liberation struggle in exile from 1960-1990 while Nelson Mandela was imprisoned on Robben Island. During those 30 years he not only kept the African National Congress (ANC) unified, led his movement both inside and outside South Africa in a successful battle against apartheid, his calls to the international community to isolate and sanction the South African regime created the most globalised human rights struggle of the 20th century. In the end, his actions released Nelson Mandela and laid the foundation for a new South Africa. Eight would-be Survivors live on a billboard for three days in media first

0

Strategic content and production agency 10th Street helped attract three million people across South Africa for M-Net’s Survivor SA Facebook Live billboard campaign.

The campaign, a partnership with Retroviral Digital Communications, JCDecaux and Reel Robot, also attracted 2000 new followers to the Survivor SA Facebook page and secured 2000 high-quality video entries from hopefuls wanting to secure a role in the reality TV show.

“This was a huge project for us as it is a resoundingly successful first in South Africa’s fast-evolving media landscape,” says Darren Kerr, director and executive producer at 10th Street. “The success of the event demonstrates the rapidly increasing power of social media when combined with great live activations and audience involvement.”

The campaign’s objective was to get as many Facebook users as possible to tune into the Survivor SA Facebook page for a live stream of Wild Card contestants battling it out in a public space.

For three days starting on 23 November 2018, eight contestants lived on a billboard at the corner of William Nicol and Sandton Drive in Johannesburg, competing in various challenges, with the winner receiving an automatic slot in the next series of Survivor SA.

Ordinary contestants had until 26 November 2017 to submit their entries on M-Net’s website, with the campaign attracting the bulk of the 2000 video entries sent in.

Being the first of its kind, and being shot on a tight budget, the three-day production offered some unique technical challenges for 10th Street. The seven-person production team, equipped with high definition cameras and live streaming via Terradek devices from an outside broadcast van, had to shoot from across a busy intersection and contend with bad weather.

On the first night of broadcasting, all eight contestants and six cameras were hit with a major storm. With everything left exposed, some of the technical gear was damaged.

“We spent a lot of time in pre-production to prepare for the shoot, but we had to adapt to every obstacle as it came up,” Kerr says. “In the end, it was worth it because we reached a massive audience on a channel that offered instant feedback, interaction and engagement. Viewers were excited because they could watch the content from anywhere.”

Sunu creates African superhero themed follow-up to Absolut’s One Source campaign

0

Egg Films’ Sunu directed Africa On Fire, NativeVML’s follow-up to the Cannes Gold-winning Absolut One Source campaign. Africa On Fire has already been featured on leading international trade publication Shots.

Shot in Ghana, the four-minute film portrays creative revolutionaries as the superheroes they are – with their art form as their superpower. South African rappers Khuli Chana and Sho Madjozi star as The Dragon and The Rain Queen respectively, while photographers Trevor Stuurman (SA), Fabrice Monteiro (Senegal-Benin) and Osborne Macharia (Kenya) are The Explorer; The Iron Warrior; and The Eye.

The original One Source campaign birthed a SAMA and Metro FM-nominated music video, an iTunes SA number one single, and a bestselling album that became a war-cry for the continent’s creative revolution. One Source won Gold in Entertainment at Cannes Lions; was the most awarded campaign at The Bookmarks; and made Sunu and Kerry Hosford the top ranked director and producer respectively at this year’s Loerie Awards, where it won two Golds and eleven awards in total. More importantly, One Source helped Absolut reclaim its leadership position as the number one selling vodka in South Africa.

The new film is promoting One Source Live, a festival of African creativity.  On 24 March 2018, leading African creative revolutionaries in music, fashion and art will gather in Johannesburg for a spectacular all-day live event with multiple stages, performances and collaborations geared at re-writing Africa’s story.

Sunu creates African superhero themed follow-up to Absolut’s Cannes Gold-winning One Source campaign

Behind the campaign is a call for all Africans to join the creative revolution and change the way African creativity is represented online. This aims to replace the dominance of curio images with a true reflection of African creativity, with more images of contemporary African art. People can visit OneSourceLive.com to get involved.

Iris Le Berg, global marketing manager at The Absolut Company, says: “Absolut has a long history of supporting artists and standing up for the rights of communities; whether it be LGBT or female power/rights. One Source Live underscores our belief that creatives are the real leaders who can rewrite and recreate the kind of change that modern Africa is poised to own. We are bringing these creative revolutionaries together to highlight Africa as the creative engine of the world. One Source Live is a movement that promotes a proud and authentic African identity by reminding people that we all come from One Source.”

As Khuli raps in One Source, “Africa no longer riding shotgun / Africa ain’t no jungle / I think it’s time we made them listen / Change is here.”

Sunu went straight onto Africa On Fire on his return from Hollywood, where he directed his first TV series episode on the People’s Choice-nominated TV series Madam Secretary, with Tea Leoni.

“What a time to be alive,” says Sunu. “Zimbabwe is on the rise. My country. My soul. My first TV directing gig for Madam Secretary is out. And finally I am so excited to share Africa On Fire, a project about creative freedom and emancipation. I have dreamt of seeing African superheroes on the screen since I was a child. Here we go! Here’s to freedom and our beautiful continent.”
