SCREEN AFRICA EXCLUSIVE: From 23 October to 2 November
the Banff Film Festival will take place at Ster-Kinekor cinemas across South Africa,
presenting local audiences with a diverse line-up of outdoor adventure films from
around the globe. Sponsored by Cape Union Mart, this is the festival’s 10th year in
South Africa and will include Port Elizabeth and Durban audiences. Penny Parker,
marketing coordinator at Cape Union Mart says, “What started as a small following
has grown into a South African culture. The local leg of the tour is increasingly
popular with South African adventure film fans each year, which is a great
confirmation of how passionate South Africans are about the outdoors. Tickets sell
out almost immediately – indicating a wonderful, healthy audience of Banff fans who
anticipate the festival each year.’
The festival features 11 award-winning and audience-nominated Banff World Tour
films, tailored to South African audience’s tastes, as well as the winning submission
from the Cape Union Mart Adventure Film Challenge. This annual film competition
encourages South African filmmakers and athletes to capture and celebrate local
outdoor culture. “The films featured in The Banff Mountain Film Festival showcase
amazing places, people and adventures from around the world. In more than 40
countries, South Africa included, audiences come together to share the experience,
to be entertained and informed, and to be inspired to pursue their own adventures,’
says Parker.
According to Parker some festival highlights include And Then We
Swam, a film about two ordinary men who attempt an extreme swimming
and rowing adventure, despite being under-prepared. The film was awarded Best
Film: Exploration and Adventure at the international Banff Film Festval competition.
Winner of the People’s Choice Award was Sufferfest 2: Desert Alpine,
featuring familiar adventure faces Cedar Wright and Alex Honnold who ride their
bikes and climb desert towers in the American Southwest.
