The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has appointed Frans Matlala as
the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO). Matlala, a former banking executive and
consultant to the SABC, takes over from Lulama Mokhoba who resigned as CEO last
year.
SABC board deputy chairperson Leah Khumalo said, “The board is excited and
confident that the right person with the leadership, skills and qualifications has been
appointed. In addition Mr Matlala has previously served as project and strategic
support to the board and the executive directors of the organisation. The Board,
management and staff will provide Mr Matlala with all the support he will need
during his tenure and we wish him well’.
The DA released a statement on the appointment saying there was cause for
cautious optimism but that Matlala seemed to carry the necessary qualifications and
experience for the role. However, the party also stated, “There are some question
marks around the process to appoint Mr Matlala. With only six members, the board
is three short of the quorum it requires to make legally binding decisions such as
the appointment of a new CEO. The DA is looking into this.’
Matlala stated, “I am excited and humbled by the confidence that the SABC board
has in me to lead this important institution in South Africa. I have a mammoth task
to serve the South African public in fulfilling the public service broadcaster’s
mandate to its full potential and beyond. I have faith that with the work that has
already been done, the foundation has been laid and we will work as a collective to
achieve our goals’.
