The Writers’ Guild of South Africa presents intermediate and masterclass workshops
on Writing for Sitcoms/Comedies in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.
International writer, director and producer, Tim O’Donnell, will host the classes.
O’Donnell has written, executive produced and/or directed a number of shows
including: Growing Pains, Lizzie McGuire, Disney
Channel’s Phil of the Future and Lifetime’s Army Wives.
Some of the topics covered in the intermediate and/or master class workshops are:

• The principles of jokes
• The principles of narrative comedy
• Generating and developing story ideas
• The construction of the classic sitcom
• The creation of memorable and comic characters
• Plotting techniques and story structure
• The process of adapting successful shows to a different culture and
audience
• Comedy techniques
• The TV comedy Writers Room
• Methods for formulating series bibles and pitching concepts
• Directing comedy and comedy timing
• Selling local comedy formats to an international audience
