Ad agency Ogilvy and Mather Johannesburg (O&M JHB) has launched the latest
KFC Brings the Taste of Home television commercial, which was shot on location
in Thailand and directed by Kim Geldenhuys. Filming a commercial abroad was a
first for the brand in the 40 years that KFC has been making advertisements in
South Africa.
Commented Lizanne Bartlett, Marketing Director for KFC SA: “We wanted an
advert that would show how the great taste of KFC creates moments that
connect people. We took the bold step of shooting this advert in Thailand
because we knew that the culture there is so different to that of South Africa,
and this would highlight just how important familiarity is in creating these
connections.’
In the ad, a young girl from South Africa has been uprooted from home to live in
Bangkok with her mother. Everything is unfamiliar, but she finds a taste of home
– and a new friend – when the two have KFC in Bangkok together.
Mike Martin, Creative Director of O&M JHB said they were really excited about
shooting their first advert abroad with Geldenhuys. He added: “The uniqueness
of Thailand’s architecture, infrastructure and cultural practices are so different to
that of South Africa and this is what swayed us to choose this location.’
