Online registration for the 4th edition of the People to People International Documentary Conference (P2P) is now open for an exciting three-day programme dedicated to the art, technology and business of documentary in Africa.
P2P 2013 offers a range of exciting activities from the 16 to 18 September at the Wits Theatre in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. These include the P2P Industry Hub – a platform for panel discussions; P2P DocSchool master classes with visiting filmmakers; and P2P Showcase, held in partnership with South Africa’s leading documentary festivals, the Tri Continental Film Festival (TCFF) and the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival.
The P2P Industry Hub, open to registered delegates only, brings together a range of documentary specialists from across the world to discuss the most pertinent issues facing African documentary today. Among the hot topics covered are freedom of expression, digital speculation in funding and distribution, international co-production and African film and digital identities.
P2P offers a stellar line-up of guest speakers including the controversial Mads Brugger (Denmark), maverick Djo Tunda Wa Munga (DRC), transmedia starlet Aina Abiodun (Nigeria/US), legendary producers Joslyn Barnes (US) and Jacques Bidou and global documentary decision makers Nick Fraser (BBC Storyville UK), Margje De Koning (Ikon, Netherlands), Ingrid Falck (Al Jazeera Witness UK), Amy Richardson (Worldview UK) and Judy Kibinge (Docubox East Africa).
The P2P Storycode Paper Hack will allow delegates to discover the infinite possibilities of digital storytelling through the P2P Storycode Paper Hack, a day long closed workshop designed and hosted by Storycode NY’s Aina Abiodun. The workshop brings documentary filmmakers together with a range of media producers from app-developers and game programmers to digital artists and animators. To participate in the P2P Storycode Paperhack send your bio and a short motivation to arya@people2people.co.za. Spaces are limited so first come first booked.
P2P DocSchool: Once again P2P will offer emerging filmmakers and students access to the invaluable knowledge of resident and visiting documentary masters in intimate classroom style settings. To sign up, visit the website for more information.
In terms of the P2P Showcase, P2P together with implementing partner TCFF and founding partner Encounters will host a line-up of open screening-events with attending filmmakers. Mads Brugger’s provocative The Ambassador together with another controversial Danish documentary The Act of Killing by Joshua Oppenheimer and Snake Dance by Manu Riche are all sure to inspire heated debate and dialogue.
Say conference co-directors Arya Lalloo and Katarina Hedren: “During the preparations of P2P 2013 our biggest challenges have been linked to that most elusive of resource – money. The difficult funding situation has meant that we have had to cut the Good Pitch2 Johannesburg. It was a difficult decision to make and one that has had impacts across the board. Though very disappointed that we will not be bring back the “pitching forum like no other’ to Johannesburg this year, The People to People International Documentary Conference has survived the financial autumn of 2013 and is ready to host you once again.’
