Jintek Film and Television School is a pioneering and distinguished audio-visual and training academy that will open its doors for the first time in the metropolitan city of Tshwane on 1 July 2013.
The school is a division of the Jintek Varsity College, a private FET College based in Pretoria. The college was established in 2008 to provide further education and training mostly to students who come from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.
According to Basil Dube, the new head of Film and Television at Jintek, there is a general lack of access to film education and training in South Africa.
“We have established the film school in line with the National Film and Video Foundation’s objective of promoting access to film education and skills development in historically disadvantaged communities,’ says Dube, who is also the new regional secretary for the Pan-African Filmmakers Federation (FEPACI).
According to Dube, the Jintek Film School is the first black owned film training institution in South Africa and is committed to the transformation and development of the local film industry.
In its first year Jintek Film School will offer the MICT-SETA accredited NQF Level 4 course in film and television production. First time filmmakers will be taught both theory and practice in areas such as screenwriting, research, directing, cinematography, producing, camera work, editing, marketing and distribution. Students will also be offered a free short course in computer literacy.
Situated in Pretoria’s central business district between Nelson Mandela Drive and Du Toit Street, the school will form an important cultural link with the South African State Theatre in the northern part of the city and the Arts Campus of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in the east of the city.
